Lions Stranded in San Diego
San Diego, Calif. - NAIA fourth-ranked Point Loma Nazarene University turned away visiting Vanguard University in a GSAC baseball game at the Carroll B. Land baseball stadium. Notching three straight two-run innings, the Sea Lions earned a 6-1 victory over the Lions, to take a 2-1 lead in the season series.
The Lions stranded nine runners on base today, including two in the top of the ninth inning with Vanguard's lone run coming in the fifth inning against PLNU starter Brandon Dixon. Senior Ethan Gentry walked to lead off the frame and moved to second base on a wild pitch. Moving to third on a grounder to first base, Gentry scored on another infield out by Keegan Freeman.Â
Dixon held the Lions to three hits and struck out nine batters in his six innings of work to earn the win. Pt. Loma relievers Kenny Houser and Kevin Soares shut the Lions out on two hits while striking out four more batters in the final three innings of the game.
The Sea Lions jumped in front 2-0 with a pair of runs in the second inning off VU starter Brandon Godfrey. Godfrey worked the first six innings and was tagged with four more runs, including two in the third and fourth innings as the Sea Lions totaled nine hits (two home runs) on the day. VU reliever Jordan Wishmyer pitched the last two innings and completely shut down the Sea Lion offense, allowing no hits and striking out two Sea Lions along the way.
Vanguard drops to 16-21 overall with today's loss, but the teams return to Vanguard tomorrow for a GSAC rematch, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in Costa Mesa.
