Lailoni Mayfield is back at the VU Softball Field as an Assistant Coach, joining the staff of Sydney Lahners and Gabby Sandoval.
Mayfield played her final year of eligibility at VU after four years at Syracuse, where she hit .244 over 105 games. She rapidly proved indispensable for the Lions in 2022, hitting .353 with an on-base percentage of .434. She had 53 hits, 21 RBI, 16 walks (tied for a team-high), struck out only once all season, was part of a defense that had the fewest errors in the Golden State Athletic Conference, and was honored with an All-GSAC team selection at the end of the year. The Blue and Gold were 39-15 that season and were a bubble team for the NAIA Softball National Tournament Opening Round, but did not hear their name called on selection day. However, her final season was her most productive from the plate, giving her a career .285 batting average.
After graduation, Mayfield stuck with the game she loves by working as an assistant coach at Whittier College, where she helped the Poets go 37-34. Along with official coaching experience, Mayfield has been a private instructor and worked as the Social Media and Marketing Coordinator for Premier Girls Fastpitch, a softball training center based in Huntington Beach. With vital experience and knowledge of playing on the VU Softball Field, Coach Lahners is excited to have another member on her staff.
"Lailoni is a great addition to our staff," said the Lions' Head Coach. "I'm excited for her to work with our offense this year. Lailoni played four years at the (NCAA) Division I level and brings a ton of knowledge and passion for the game. She is also an alumni who is very eager to give back to our program. Overall, I could not be more excited for Coach Mayfield to be joining our staff."
