New Terrain For Best, Throwers Take A Stab in the Record Books, VU Excel at Arnie Robinson Invitational

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - More records fell by the wayside for Vanguard women's track and field, as the Lions tallied eight podium finishes at the Arnie Robinson Invitational, Saturday at Merrill Douglas Stadium.

Kaylee Best won both the long and triple jump, racking up new career-bests and pulling out new school records. Her long jump came in at 20' 00.50" while her triple jump feat cleared 40' 3.50". Best becomes the first Lion to trek past the 20- and 40-feet domains in each respective event. It is also the freshman's seventh win in her six total events.

Best was not the only Lion who had career-best marks in the long jump. The sophomore pairing of Kolena Apana (18' 00.25") and Briana Martin (17' 00.00") also found themselves with new de facto metrics. Apana's long jump was the second best trek in program history.

Moving through the rest of the field team, Aaliyah Espinoza led the Lion trio in discus throw, securing second (38.65m). Andrea Espinoza Noriega centered into fifth, with a 32.69m heave. Gimena Hurtado was just .7m behind, with a 32.62m throw, which earned her sixth.

The roles shifted in the hammer throw, with Espinoza Noriega taking the wheel with her 39.02m throw, which stood as a new personal-best and sixth-place finish. Hurtado followed the trend of career-bests, clearing out 38.74m to take eighth. Espinoza threw a 31.96m, taking 13th.

Espinoza Noriega and Hurtado's hammer throws were the eighth and ninth best, respectively, in program history.

Elizabeth Betten led the Lions in both of her solo events. She was seventh in the 100m, posting a 12.22, which was a new season-best and eighth fastest in program history. She was followed by Jillian Orm, who also sped into a season-best time with a 13.10 to take 22nd.

The Lions were represented in the 100 H by Rebecca Sicotte, with the freshman debuting in the event in 23rd with an 18.63 time. Isabella Alvarez was also a lone wolf for VU in the 400m, cracking into the top 10 at 1:03.39.

Betten also headlined the 200m for the Blue and Gold, finishing just a blink off a podium spot, with a 25.39 time to lock down fourth. She was followed by Haley Svendsen's 27.24 and Orm's 28.43.

The Lions put out their largest pack in the 800m and 1500m events. Mary Sawczuk's personal best at 2:18.66 led VU, as the junior netted a fourth-place nod. Kaitlyn Smith and Haley Butenschoen were the closest Lions to Sawczuk, coming in 10th and 13th. The pair was separated by just one second, with Smith taking a 2:24.66 mark and Butchenschoen clearing in at 2.25.74. Also taking personal-bests in the 800m were sophomores Hailey Quiroz (2:27.34) and Sydney Sydney (2:33.70).

In her first 1500m event, Megan Charley paced Vanguard with a podium spot, storming in at 4:42.39 to stake third place. It was also the eighth-best VU time in Lion history, topping Marline Estell's 4:43.30 run in 2014. Quiroz added another personal best (5:05.87) to end as the next highest VU finisher in 16th. Freshman Zoe Tavares found her stride to take 18th (5:07.47) in her debut in the event.

Butenschoen was the last Lion to clock a personal-best in the race, fielding a 5:08.56 to finish behind Tavares in 19th.

The demanding 3000m steeplechase race was conquered by freshmen Adrianna Huffstuttler and Chase Sullivan. Huffstuttler clipped a personal-best to win the event, penciling in at 12:22.52. Sullivan finished hot on the tail, using a 12:23.40 run to take second place.

The Lions continued to fill the podiums in the 5000m with Giselle Rubio rolling in a second-place finish with an 18:43.20 time. Bella Sword planted herself in third (18:51.55) while Emily Noyes fueled a career-best 18:58.96 trek. Kaitlyn Barragan also ended in the top half of competitors, working her way into seventh (20:11.23).

As for relays, the 4x400m relay team of Kaitlyn Smith, Haley Butenschoen, Brady Wylie, and ZoeTheodora Taylor issued a 4:17.39 effort to take fifth place.

What's Next? The Lions head to Santa Barbara for the two-day Jim Klein Decathlon-Heptathlon next week, March 26-27.
