IRVINE, Calif. – It was stacked weekend for Vanguard women's track and field, with two meets, starting with the Jim Klein Heptathlon on Thursday and the two-day Vince O'Boyle Invitational hosted by UCI this weekend. VU welcomed a few more top 10 showings and saw
Kaylee Best continue her record setting trends.
The Lions were represented at the Jim Klein Heptathlon by freshman
Rebecca Sicotte, who garnered 3086 points across her seven events, sixth out of the eight competitors. Her best finish came in the javelin throw, where she launched a 66'2", which was fourth for that discipline. She also notched career-bests in long jump (14' 5") and the 800m race (2:44.13) both of which seated her in sixth. She debuted in the 100m with a 17.78 time was which was seventh. Her high jump slotted in at 1.25 (4'1.25") which was eighth. She slotted in her shot put slate at 8.46m (27'9.25") fifth, which was also where she placed for the 200m (28.2).
Moving into the Vince O'Boyle Invitational, Best was the runner-up in the triple jump, but fractured her program triple jump record from last week, reaching 40' 6¾" on her sixth and final attempt to recast her stake as VU's number one in the record book.
Briana Martin peaked on her fifth attempt 37' 3¾" and set a new personal best which earned her sixth on the day and fifth all time in program history.
In the long jump Best was second, finding her best leap on her fifth go to launch at 19' 6" to claim silver and fill another spot amongst the most historic long jump performances at VU.
Kolena Apana's 17' 4¾" was just two inches shy of a top 10 all-time performance as the sophomore ended ninth at the Invitational.
The hammer throw was led by
Aaliyah Espinoza for the Blue and Gold, as all three VU competitors were sixth, seventh and eighth. Espinoza's personal best of 132' 4" brought her up to seventh all time in the VU charts.
Andrea Espinoza Noriega stood at 129' 8", which is eighth best all-time, overtaking her previous margin from last week.
Gimena Hurtado's first try was her best at 128' 0", which tied her for 10th best all-time in VU's history.
Espinoza was leaps ahead in the discus throw, with the fourth-best VU discus throw in program history by an inch (124' 4"). Hurtado and Espinoza Noriega followed in 11
th (108' 11") and 12
th (101' 4") at the meet respectively.
As for the runners,
Elizabeth Betten led the Vanguard sprinters in the 100m dash, clocking in at 12.48 to finish 13th. Freshman
Angelique Addae was the next highest finisher in 18
th (12.66) while
Jillian Orm was in at 13.20 which was 26
th.
Betten was also the Lion leader in the 200m with a 25.40 run.
The 400m was also a solitary Vanguard field, with
Haley Svendsen taking a top 10 finish with a 1:02.17 race.
The Blue and Gold loaded a packed house in both the 800m and 1500m race. The 800m saw
Haley Butenschoen stake 13
th as the top VU runner at 2:19.75.
Kaitlyn Smith was less than a second later at 2:20.35 in 14th spot. The rest of the pack was made up of
Hailey Quiroz (2:22.39),
Isabella Alvarez (2:23.30) ,
Brady Wylie (2:23.71), and
Sydney Sydney (2:35.72). As for the 1500m run,
Mary Sawczuk paced VU in 12
th (4:35.90), with Bella Sword in 15
th (4:47.24). Behind them were
Madyson Nakamura (4:54.38) and
Giselle Rubio (4:55.09) in 21st and 22nd, respectively.
