LONG BEACH, CALIF. -- The Pacific West Conference Defender of the Week Award has been handed to VU's
Caleb Johnson, who became the first Vanguard keeper not named
Aidan Hay (a two-time winner) to receive the honor. Johnson had big moments in Saturday night's clash against CUI, as the Lions emerged with a triumphal 3-1 win. He faced 18 shots during the evening and made eight saves on nine shots on goal. After making a save in the 22nd minute, Johnson brushed off the opening CUI goal to deny the Golden Eagles seven more times the rest of the game, including six in the second half. That included a flurry of four stops around the hour mark as the hosts tried to extend their lead, but his heroics allowed VU to transition to offense and tie the game in the 69th minute, with two more goals over the final 20 minutes putting the cap on the victory. The Lions improved to 3-1-1 in PacWest play and moved into a tie with Biola with 10 points for second in the standings. Johnson and company depart this week for the road trip to Dominican and Jessup for Wednesday and Friday games.
