Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Spirited Effort for Lions Against No. 1 UCLA

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play resumed for Vanguard men's volleyball Tuesday night, but a trip to #1 UCLA ended in a sweep by the Bruins.  The Blue and Gold had two sets where they had more kills than the Bruins, and the squad ended level with UCLA with 16 digs, but VU could not scratch a set.  Falling 25-17, 25-21, and 25-20, VU dropped to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in MPSF action, while UCLA remained unbeaten (7-0, 2-0).

What Happened?  The first set had some positive moments early for VU, as Logan Freemon and Braddock Duckworth picked up kills, but UCLA posted three unanswered points to go ahead 10-6.  The Lions slowly reeled UCLA back in to tie things at 14-14, with a Brock Henderson and Duckworth block and a Grant Veldman ace.  But the Bruins jumped ahead by two, and ahead 19-17, the hosts slapped down the final six points of the frame to win 25-17.

Set 2
Logan Finley and Veldman had early kills, and Cole Oliver added his weight to the assault, helping Vanguard to a two-point lead.  The Lions stayed a step ahead of the Bruins, but a 6-0 run by UCLA took a 10-8 VU lead and flipped it to a 14-10 Bruin edge.  The chase was on, and Vanguard again got on level terms on a triple block by Oliver, Henderson, and Finley.  Square at 17-all, UCLA took four of the next five points and sprinted to the line first to take a 25-21 result in the middle frame.  UCLA had a game-high .500 hitting percentage in the second, while VU was at a .115 mark.

Set 3
The closet set in its entirety, the teams were unable to separate by more than two points for a majority of the interval.  There were nine ties through the first half of the set, and the Lions got kills from every position.  Tied at 12-12, UCLA tallied the next two points, but two Oliver strikes and a Henderson dump brought the teams back together at 15-15.  UCLA had a small 3-0 stretch after that, and that unfortunately proved to be the difference. The Lions answered the Bruins the rest of the set, but could not tie things again, dropping the third 25-20.  The Lions hit a team-best .179 in the third, checking UCLA to a .261 clip.

Vanguard hit .122 in the match, and UCLA had a .365 rate.  VU got eight kills from Freemon and Oliver, with Veldman next with seven.  Henderson had 24 assists, Veldman tied for the match-high of two aces, and Henderson had three block assists to pace the Blue and Gold.  Jacob Bayston and Freemon led VU with four digs.

What's Next?  Vanguard returns home for a match on Saturday against Edward Waters (Fla.) at noon.
