11th for Men's Golf at Saint Martin's Invite

DUPONT, Wash. -- Vanguard men's golf landed in 11th out of 16 teams on Saturday to conclude the Saint Martin's Bishop Invitational.  VU had a three-day total of 885 strokes (300-300, 285), 21 shots over-par.  Alexander Elia paced the squad; finishing tied for 17th at -2 (214).  Simon Fraser won the team trophy and Ben Crinella was at -10 to pick up the individual honors.

The Course: The Home Course opened in 2007 and lies across the street from the greater Puget Sound.  With rich green grass and a layout that elicits memories of a course in Scotland, the scorecard gives a maximum distance of 7,420 yards.  Plenty of tall grass and shallow bunkers force golfers to stay alert, but the course has a player-friendly reputation and was ranked as the second-best public course by Golfweek.

What Happened?  Elia had an ok start, with a round of 75, picking up one birdie and 13 pars.  His second round was highlighted by an eagle on the fifth hole and three more birdies for 70 strokes.  But his final day was his best, as he birdied four holes, pared 13, and went +1 on one hole for a 69.  Kyle Koski was next for the Blue and Gold, netting 224 strokes for a +8 result in a tie for 49th.  Koski went 75-75-74 and had an eagle on the seventh hole during his initial round, along with one birdie.  He then grabbed four birdies during round two and picked up one more on Saturday with 14 pars to make his final round his best.

Fisher Ransom had the same net result as Koski but had scores of 76-75-73 to reach 224.  Ransom had three birdies during his second and third tours of the course and slotted home two more during his first round.  He had 30 pars in all at the end of the Invitational.  Tyler Williams tied for 60th at the end of the event with 228 shots, posting rounds of 73-80-75.  He had one birdie during the opening round, two during the middle round, and three during the final day.  He had 30 pars to help his cause over both days of action.  Rex Robinette was tied for 63rd with 230 shots tied with Elia for a final round of 70 to balance out rounds of 75-85.  Robinette had a flawless final round, netting birdies on the ninth and 10 holes and making par on every other hole.  His first round saw the senior tally two birdies and he had a birdie and an eagle on the eighth hole during round two.

What's Next?  The men stay in Washington and play at the Western Washington Invite on Monday and Tuesday.
