INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Vanguard golf received some amazing news on Monday as the men's team was selected to compete at the NCAA Division II West/South Regional, while
Theresa Shaw received an individual at-large bid to play at the women's West Regional. A first for the program at the DII level for both genders, the student-athletes will stick around campus and begin play during the first week of May.
The California Collegiate Athletic Association is hosting the men's regional alongside Visit Stockton, with 10 teams from both the West and the South Regions getting the call to play at The Reserve at Spanos Park Golf Course. The Lions got the final at-large spot in the West's allocation, ranked one spot behind Dominican. The CCAA has five of the 10 spots, with Chico State leading the way at #2. Western Washington is the top seed from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, while Pacific West Conference champions Hawaii Hilo were slotted into fourth. West Texas A&M is the top seed amongst the South Region group. The teams get a practice round on Wednesday, May 6, before playing three rounds over May 7-9. The course is a links-style course designed by Andy Raugust and has a maximum yardage of 7,132. A par-72, the layout runs through a nature reserve with high grasses and eight water features that come into play on 12 holes. Sand bunkers ranging from small traps to large beaches force strategic choices from the tee box, making this course a challenge for all involved.
Earlier that week, Shaw will journey to Pueblo, Colorado, and take a stab in the field at the Pueblo Country Club, with Colorado State Pueblo acting as the host. Shaw was one of six individuals invited to take part at the West Regional, which includes 18 teams. Shaw joins Ashley Lam of Westminster (Utah), Lauren F. Lee of Western Washington, Orraya Jan Tipasathien of Montana State-Billings, Maria Jose Savoca of Cameron (Okla.), and Neige Dunn of Metropolitan State, University of Denver. Reigning champions Dallas Baptist got the top seed on the team side, with Point Loma landing as the top PacWest team in 10th. The Pueblo CC was constructed in 1903, making it the second-oldest Club in the state. Originally a nine-hole layout, the final nine holes were added in 1964-65, and the maximum yardage now stands at 6,507, and the course is a par-72. Many of the greens are heavily guarded by bunkers, and trees delineate the fairways, but there are no other hazards to invite trouble. The tournament has a practice round on May 3, with the three-round event kicking off on Monday, May 4.
