WALNUT, Calif. -- Vanguard women's wrestling concluded the season on Saturday after the team added the Mt. San Antonio College tournament to its docket late in the year.
Lily Avalos and
Mya Crespo participated in the event and Avalos took the gold in the 131-pound class and Crespo took third at 117 pounds.
What Happened? Crespo took on Mackenzie Muniz of Mt. SAC but despite a solid effort, Muniz won 10-0. Crespo next faced Rebkah Jimenez but could not overcome an early attack and fell 14-3, but the Lion turned it around after that. Crespo squared off against Yanissa Sanchez of Victor Valley CC and it took only 56 seconds for Crespo to earn a pin, and though it took longer against Mollie Jimenez of East LA, Crespo stuck her to the mat 33 seconds into the second half to grabbed the pin. With a 2-2 day, Crespo placed third in the bracket.
Lily Avalos had a perfect day, as the Lion went 3-0 in the bracket. She pinned Alexandrea Gallardo of Cerritos College in 27 seconds in her first bout, pinned Kaydence Boyd three seconds shy of halftime in her next encounter, and strolled to an 11-0 technical fall victory in the championship matchup against Zitali Sarmiento of Mt. SAC.
What was Said? "It is so great to conclude our season with placers, setting a great tone for next season," said Head Coach
Joe Evano.
