Huntington Beach, Calif. -- Vanguard women's wrestling was in action at Golden West College on Saturday for a trio of duals. VU took two of the three contests, defeating Fresno State and Arizona Christian, but narrowly fell to Westcliff. Vanguard is now 2-7 in duals this campaign.
What Happened? The Lions tore through Fresno State's club team, though only four wrestlers competed against an actual opponent, as Fresno State had three open classes, the Lions had one open spot, and both teams did not send anybody out for two weight divisions. Of those that wrestled,
Loretta Lopez bounced back-and-forth with Jocelynn Benitez, but Lopez grabbed a decision win.
Lily Avalos and
Piper Hall both made quick work of their foes, as they pinned Lillian Busnardo and Delliah Lozano in the first period.
Against ACU, Vanguard again won all four competed weight categories to grab a 22-16 victory. Lopez secured a pin in the first period over Catalina Brown to open things, and while Avalos gave up two points to Yaretzi Lopez, she soon stormed away after that for a 15-2 technical fall victory.
Charlize Jewell blanked Katy Madril 10-0 and
Kylee Wohlwend grabbed a quick 10-0 technical fall win as well.
Against Westcliff, VU had Avalos and
Mariz Soliman complete pins of Abby Mendoza and Jeslyn Ledezma, respectively, but a Warrior pin of Hall, and
Abbie Hock falling 3-2, gave Westcliff the 23-21 victory.
What was Said? "This was a great first tournament back from our break, and I'm pumped with how we performed. I am hyped for the next competition."
What's Next? The Evergreen Open beckons, as the Lions head to Washington next Sunday for a tournament.
