GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Vanguard dropped each of their two duals on Saturday, with the Providence (Mont.) final line being 46-2, and the backhalf of the doubleheader against Colorado Mesa finishing at 45-4.
Alexis Garza was the lone individual winner on the night for Vanguard in the 103-division, taking her bout by decision 8-3 to open the dance with Colorado Mesa.
What Happened?
In the first dual against the Argonauts of Providence (MT),
Elena Ramirez came out on a mission, securing the first four points of her individual matchup, which saw her salvage one team point for VU. Meanwhile,
Mariz Soliman's four points in the second period of her bout at 180 put the other team point on the board for the Blue and Gold against one of the best programs in the nation.
The Blue and Gold were open at four weight classes against the host Mavericks, giving CMU 20 free points. The group that wrestled did their best against a tough program and many of the Lions showed a determined spirit even in defeat.
Alexis Garza's win saw her take control early with a 6-1 edge after the opening period. After her opponent made a brief stab to close the gap, Garza finished the deal with two points to give her the final tally of 8-3, collecting three team points for the Blue and Gold.
Piper Hall was the other team point for VU in her bout, with a four-point move to open her contest.
