HONOLULU, Hawaii. -- The Vanguard women's soccer team won most of the main statistics against Hawaii Pacific today, but the Sharks managed a goal with four minutes to go to steal a 1-0 victory. The Lions drop to 3-4-1 overall and 1-1 in Pacific West Conference action, while HPU improved to 2-2-4, 1-1-3.
Â
What Happened? The Blue and Gold put almost everything they could towards or on the HPU net, as the squad held a 19-6 edge in shots and an 11-3 lead in shots on goal. VU even got some help from the corner, as the squad had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks, but to no avail, as Skylar Jacobsen made all 11 saves.Â
Sydney Powell mustered four shots, with two on target.Â
Rachel Penick went 3-for-3, as her shots were all on net, with
Kate Burns next with three shots, two on target.
Â
Vanguard controlled the possession counter and generated good chances throughout the game, as the squad seemed poised to repeat their big win over Jessup from last Saturday. One of the best chances in the first half came when Burns powered a shot into the upper half of the net in the 24th minute, yet it was punched away. Another good attempt came fromÂ
Kennedy Cypher, who broke past a couple of defenders and had a shot that seemed to be going bar-down for a goal in the 40th minute, but between the keeper and the pipe, it stayed out. VU had four shots on target in the first 45 and seven in the second half that forced an HPU save, but despite some wicked attempts, Jacobsen had an answer.
Â
The Sharks scored after a trio of throw-ins on the sideline got them deep into the final third. Hawaii Pacific crossed the ball right into the path of
Olivia Weidner, but the ball did not stick to her gloves and an HPU player smacked it home for the winner.

What's Next? The Lions get some rest on Thursday before flying to the Big Island on Friday for a game against Hawaii Hilo on Saturday.
