First-Ever Tournament Win to Close the Fall, Ransom and Elia Fill out the Podium

SOLVANG, Calif. – Men's golf continued to swing into the record books, as the Lions claimed the program's first-ever tournament win, taking the Danish Classic at Alisal GC. The Blue and Gold ended the fall portion of their season shooting seven under par and bolstering an impressive second day score to finish with a total of 569 (280-280).

After narrowly dropping the WWU Invitational on playoff holes last week, Fisher Ransom was once again at the top for VU. This time, however, the senior locked in the individual crown, netting 136 (67-69) strokes to earn the title of individual champion for the first time this season.

The transfer was followed closely by fellow Lion Alexander Elia, who took second place with a season-best score of 137 (69-68). The two VU golfers were two of the only three competitors who went under par at the event.

The Course: The Ranch Course at Alisal Guest Ranch & Resort is an 18-hole, 6,542-yard, par-72 golf course that has been in operation since 1956. The course was designed by Billy Bell and is known for its picturesque setting among ancient oak, sycamore, and eucalyptus trees, providing panoramic views of the Santa Ynez Mountains. Golfers can expect challenging manicured fairways, including a barranca that winds through them, as well as significant elevation changes.

What Happened? Ransom went eight under par and spent both days in the lead to act as the tournament's pace-setter. He either parred or birdied on every hole in round one, and finished with 19 pars and nine birdies (3rd). The senior also led on par-four holes (-4, 3.69) and went even on par-threes, which was second best at the event.

Elia stood right behind Ransom for the entirety of the Classic. His seven under par score was highlighted with seven birdies and eight pars on the closing round. Elia would leave the tournament as the joint leader in total birdies (11) and solo leader on par-three holes (-1, 2.89). He was also second in par-fours (-2) and par-fives (-4).

Tyler Williams was the next highest Vanguard finisher, tallying 147 strokes (76-71) to tie in 11th place. Williams was seventh at the Classic in birdies and had six of his total seven in the second round. The junior was also tied second on par-five holes (-4, 4.60) alongside Elia.

Paul Howard and Rex Robinette were both locked in at 154 shots, tying 22nd to round out the Lion competitors. Howard's season debut was split into equal rounds of 77-77. He had 19 pars and four birdies, with two birdies each day. Robinette (82-77) jumped 10 spots on the final day with 12 of his 20 pars molded in the closing round. The captain also concluded the Classic with five birdies.

The Blue and Gold departed from Solvang with a tournament-best 36 birdies. They also led on par-four holes (+6, 4.08) and booked in 98 pars, which was fourth.

What Was Said? "It was only a matter of time before we got our first team victory," shared Head Coach Jeff Anderson.  "We've all been working so hard and trending in the right direction. I couldn't be prouder of these guys for their fight and grit. It's just the beginning for this team and I'm looking forward to the spring season. Congratulations to Fisher and Alex!"
