ROCKLIN, Calif. -- It was a tough night for Vanguard women's volleyball team, which fell to Jessup on the road to begin the road trip to the northern part of the state. VU (13-5, 1-4 Pacific West Conference) took set two 25-23, but lost the other three 25-19, 25-21, and 25-11. JU (7-10, 2-4) picked up its first win over Vanguard after three straight defeats and won in Rocklin for the first time in three years.
What Happened? The first set began with Jessup taking the first point and holding a slim one or two-point edge. The Lions responded with scoring efforts from
Kayla Robinson and
Morgan Cole to stay in touch, with some Warrior attacking errors putting the Lions ahead 10-9. However, separate 4-0 and 3-0 stretches was the response from JU to keep the hosts a step ahead.
Viktoria Dickson slammed down a ball to bring the gap down to 21-19, but Jessup notched the final four points of the set. VU hit .148 in the period, while JU had a .259 efficiency rating.
Set 2
In a tightly contested second set, the Lions edged Jessup with a 25-23 win, hitting a team-best .333 in the stanza. Though JU grabbed the first two points,
Adeline Galvanoni ripped a trio of kills to the deck to put the Lions back in contention. Dickson and
Abigayle Gotwals recorded strikes to push the Lions into a 6-4 lead, and the Blue and Gold kept a firm hand on the rudder throughout the next few rallies. However, a 13-10 lead went under thanks to five-straight points by the Warriors. Jessup held a narrow advantage as the set moved forward, but a huge shift came on a Dickson strike to make the score 22-21 JU. The Lions used a Jessup error and a block by
Payton Darm and Galvanoni to take a 23-22 lead and completed the set on a 5-0 run to win 25-23. JU hit .098 in the second.
Set 3
In the third set, Jessup took control early, jumping to a 5-1 edge, though VU was not completely upended. Vanguard reeled Jessup back in, with an ace by
Abby Lutterloh and a blasted kill by
Morgan Cole tying the score at 8-8. Each side registered small leads, but the teams always returned to level pegging, with another kill by Cole making it 20-all. Yet Jessup had the best of the play from there, taking five of the next six points to win 25-21. VU hit .200, while Jessup had a .188 mark in the third.
Set 4
The home side denied any thoughts of a fifth set with a .333 hitting rate, with VU not helping their cause with a -0.028 rating. Jessup was ahead 10-3 and then 16-6 before the Lions netted back-to-back points. Ahead 19-11, the Warriors scored the final six points of the match.
Despite the defeat, Cole led all players with 14 kills and again procured a double-double with 12 digs. It is her 11th double-double of the season and her fourth in a row. Galvanoni had 13 kills and Dickson had eight. Both
Julia Ringenberg and
Macy Kavanaugh had 21 helpers, with Kavanaugh and Dickson joining
Kate Fagundes with eight digs. Dickson had two solo blocks and one helper, with Darm tallying three block assists. VU hit .167 as a team on the evening.
