Three Individual MSPF Champions For Women's Wrestling

ATHERTON, Calif. -- The first women's wrestling tournament in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation history took place today and in the dual between Menlo and Vanguard, the Oaks would prevail 27-13.  However, VU took three individual titles, as Abbeygael Cabuag, Alexis Garza, and Lily El-Masri won their weight classes to give Vanguard MPSF history on Sunday.

What Happened?  Cabuag had two takedowns in the first frame to lead 6-0 but Angelique Cervantes rolled off seven straight points to open the second frame.  Cabuag escaped the onslaught and flipped back to the attack, making two scoring moves towards the end of the bout to snag an 8-7 victory at 103 pounds.  Garza faced Micaela Correa at 110 pounds and Garza made a takedown in the first before getting pushed out of bounds to lead 2-1 after one frame.  Garza was pushed out twice more but made the only takedown in the second to clinch a 4-3 decision victory.

VU was open at 117 pounds, which moved the contest to 124 pounds, where Mikayla Marquez met Leilah Patel.  Marquez wrestled hard but could not muster any points, falling 6-0.  Angelina Daoang faced Sara Vela at 131 pounds and trailed 3-0 after one period.  Vela got two more takedowns, but Daoang found a near-fall move to trail 7-4.  However, she could not roll that into a pin and would lose 9-4 in the hard-fought battle.

At 138 pounds, Katelynn Hernandez faced Maci Stemmons and though Hernandez got the first two scoring moves, Stemmons gathered the rest and concluded the match with a pin in the second half.  Ireri Mares was up next at 145 pounds and she gave it her all but she could not stop Danica Kelley, who made a pin in the first period.  Kylee Wohlwend took on Mikayla Lancaster at 160 pounds and Wohlwend was able to push Lancaster out of play during the first period.  However, that would be her only scoring move, as Lancaster made points in a hurry to win 11-1.

El-Masri did not have an opponent at 180 pounds and neither team had a contestant in the heavyweight class.

What was Said?  "Such an honor to be a part of history at our first conference championship and walk away with three champions," said Head Coach Joe Evano.

What's Next?  This is not the end of the season and VU returns to Menlo on February 2 for an individual tournament starting at 9:00 a.m.
