COSTA MESA – Point Loma went on a 22-7 second half run to turn a close game into an 86-55 blowout against Vanguard in PacWest men's basketball action on Thursday at the Freed Center.
The Lions were held without a field goal over the final 15 minutes and 14 seconds of the game, missing their last 20 consecutive field goal attempts.
Vanguard shot 16.0 (4 of 25) percent in the second half and a season-low 25.5 (14 of 55) percent for the game. The Lions shot an identical 1 of 9 from three-point range in both halves, finishing at a season-low 11.1 percent overall.
Leonard Turner led the Lions with a game-high 21 points, his fourth 20-point effort this season. He shot 6 of 8 from the field and sank all nine of his free throw attempts.
Aibigho Ujadughele was the only other Lion in double figures. He finished with 11 points and game-highs in rebounds (7) and steals (4). Ujadughele has posted three straight games with four steals.
Vanguard shot 75.8 (25 of 33) percent from the free throw line. The Lions went 10 of 14 at the foul line over the last 15-plus minutes, which accounted for all of their scoring over that stretch.
The Sea Lions had five players in double figures, led by Coby Barnes with 18 points on 4 of 5 from distance. Andrew Hommes scored 14 points off the bench, while Zack Paulsen, Luke Haupt and Wynton Brown all chipped in 12 apiece.
Point Loma (17-4, 10-1 PacWest) shot 49.2 (29 of 59) percent from the floor and made nine three-pointers for the game.
Vanguard dropped to 11-6 overall and 5-6 in conference play.
What Happened?: Vanguard fell into an 11-2 hole just four minutes into the contest. The Sea Lion lead hovered between six and nine points through the midpoint of the first half.
Trailing 21-12, the Lions mustered a 9-0 run over a three and a half minute span to tie the game with 6:27 remaining before halftime. Ujadughele started the rally with a layup, followed by a three from Devin Carson and back-to-back jumpers by Bryson Metz.
But the Sea Lions answered with a 13-2 run of their own – as back-to-back-to-back triples from Barnes, Haupt and Paulsen opened up a 34-23 lead at the 4:35 mark.
Turner scored five straight points for the Lions to trim the deficit to six, but the Sea Lions built the advantage back to 10 with a minute to go.
Two Turner free throws whittled the deficit to 40-32 at halftime.
The Lions started the second period on a solid note as Chiles canned a three to slash Point Loma's lead to five.
Barnes knocked down a three to stretch the Sea Lion lead back to 11, 51-40, with 17:01 to go. But five straight Lion points – all from Turner and Ujadughele – suggested promise for VU.
However, Ujadughele's layup at the 15:14 mark would represent the Blue and Gold's final made basket for the game.
VU's long lasting drought spelled doom as the Sea Lions eventually built their first 20-point lead with just under six minutes to play. The lead ballooned to as much as 32 as Point Loma outscored VU 35-10 over the final 15 minutes.
What's Next?: VU hits the road for a mid-afternoon tilt at Fresno Pacific on Saturday. Tip time is 4:30 p.m.
