Three Duals for Women's Wrestling in Ashland

ASHLAND, Ore.  -- A trio of meets greeted Vanguard women's wrestling Sunday as the squad faced the University of Southern Oregon twice and Providence (Mont.) once.  VU generated some plucky individual wins, as the squad fell to the SOU "A" line up 43-5, the "B" lineup 35-14, and the Argos 38-10.

What Happened?  Abbeygael Cabuag was the lone victor for VU against the "A" grouping of Raiders.  She pinned Diamond Lopez at 103 pounds with an impressive move to give the Lions five points in the first bout of the day.  However, the Raiders ran the table from there, with VU was open at 110, 138, and 180 pounds.  Mya Crespo was pinned by Briseis Serrano at 117 pounds, Mikayla Marquez was pinned by NAIA #10 Malia Welch at 124 pounds, Julie Garcia was pinned by Eliza Goodwin at 131 pounds, Holland Wieber pinned Ireri Mares at 145 pounds, #7 Sariah Zepeda took down Kylee Wohlwend 7-0, and #4 Kat Hingano pinned Lily El-Masri at 207 pounds.

Against the second grouping of SOU wrestlers, the Lions got 10 free points as the Raiders were open at both 103 and 110 pounds.  The other points came from El-Masri, who tossed Avery Munden-Manko around the Lion won with a 12-2 technical fall triumph.  Mi Amanda Lanphear Ramirez pinned Crespo, Myia Weiler beat Marquez 10-0, Nevaeh Arthun pinned Garcia, Maisie Bandel-Ramirez took open points for SOU at 138 pounds, Sophie Keefer pinned Mares, Vida Boskovic pinned Wohlwend, and Emily Bellant took open points at 180 pounds.

Marquez struck for five points against Providence, as she pinned Kayla Vail 45 seconds in to secure half of the Vanguard point haul.  The other five came from El-Masri again, as she racked up a 12-1 technical fall decision over Jasmine Adiniwin.  Cabuag netted a couple of takedowns but fell to #10 Isabella Bocanegra 11-5 at 103 pounds.  Alexis Garza lost to #15 Kayla Shota 11-0 at 110 pounds and Garcia was pinned by Mackenzie English.  Tyeisha Takamori pinned Mares and #20 Kacey Lee Pua pinned Wohlwend, with the Lions again open at 138 and 180 pounds.

What was Said?  "I'm proud of this team.  Always a joy to watch these athletes go out and compete," said Head Coach Joe Evano.

What's Next?  The Lions take on the new MPSF field at the inaugural conference championships on Sunday, January 26, at Menlo.
