Box Score COSTA MESA – Kaitlyn Currier and Bethany Urrabazo scored second half goals to lead the Vanguard women's soccer team to a dominating 2-0 victory over Redlands at the VU Soccer Field on Saturday.
The Lions got into the win column for the first time this season to improve to 1-2-0. The Bulldogs dropped to 3-1-1.
After a scoreless first half in which VU outshot Redlands 8-4, the Lions took all of seven seconds to dent the scoreboard to start the second stanza. Sydney Powell found Currier on the right side and she buried her shot into the net to secure her second career goal.
Vanguard generated several quality chances, including one in the 85th minute when Kennedy Cypher banged a left-footed blast off the crossbar. The Lions received an insurance goal at the 87:25 mark when Jena Howard and Urrabazo linked up, the latter notching her fourth career goal.
Howard collected her sixth career assist.
Cypher led the Lions with five shots and Currier added three. Both players put two of their shots on frame. VU outshot Redlands 19-7 and forced Bulldog goalkeeper Shannon Stewart into seven saves.
VU had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. The backline split between seniors Takara Kiesel and Celeste Kiernan, and freshmen Audrey Swanis and Hannah Caira limited the Redlands offense throughout the afternoon.
Junior goalkeeper Madalyn Morris earned her first career start with the Blue and Gold and tallied three saves. She notched her first career win and shutout.
