Women's Wrestling Nets a Victory in the Desert

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas hosted both men's and women's wrestling on Saturday and the Vanguard women's team engaged in four duals.  VU lost to Colorado Mesa University, the club team of UNLV and Snow College but did defeat the OUAZ club team 25-23.  The Lions are now 2-5 in duals this campaign.

What Happened?  VU 2 CMU 33
The Lions were held back by being open at five weight classes and only got points in two others.  Presley Munoz fell 12-2 against Maggie Smith at 207 pounds and that was the same score for VU at 110 pounds, giving the Blue and Gold two points for the dual.  Mya Crespo lost 11-0 to Marjorie McDaniel at 117 pounds, Elena Ramirez fell to Hania Halverson at 131 pounds via pin, Ireri Mares was pinned by Celina Cooke at 145 pounds, and Kylee Wohlwend was pinned by Gretchen Donally at 160 pounds.

VU 20 UNLV 24
The Blue and Gold were up to the task against the Rebels, as the Lions won four weight classes.  Abbeygael Cabuag won the first at 110 pounds, pinning Crystal Corona in 1:16 to put the Lions up 5-0.  Crespo then doubled the lead as she rolled Jasi Oleson into a pin early in the second period at 117 pounds but UNLV got five points as VU was open at 124 pounds.  Ramirez picked up five forfeit points at 131 pounds but UNLV pulled some points back as Maysa Brown Brown took down Devyn McCormick 10-0.  Mares then got five forfeit points at 145 pounds but Wohlwend was upended in the first period by Cassandra Freundlich to put the Vanguard lead in the dual at 20-14.  Unfortunately, VU was open at 180 pounds and though Lily El-Masri tried her hardest at 207 pounds, she was pinned as the Rebels won 24-20.

VU 25 OUAZ 23
The victory against the club team of the Spirit came with four victories against actual opponents.  Cabuag torched Eliza Armendariz 10-0 at 110 pounds and Ramirez pinned Terianna Skaggs in 93 seconds at 131 pounds.  Mares stuck Ebony Cortez to the mat in the second period at 145 pounds and Wohlwend glued Maya Duncan to the deck 13 seconds into the second period.  Evelyn Coronado bested Munoz at 207 pounds in a narrow 5-3 decision, but Munoz did pick up a point to make the final score 25-23 in favor of Vanguard.  The rest of the classes had at least one side open.

VU 11 Snow 38
Cabuag masted Rachel Jones by making a pin 1:10 into the first period to tie the dual score at 5-5.  Snow then ran off 18 of the next 19 points, as Kaylee Young pinned Crespo, VU remained open at 124 pounds, and Ramirez got injured against Hallie Carter at 131 pounds.  McCormick and Valery Ethington had one of the more interesting matchups of the day, as the two exchanged takedowns.  McCormick was in the mix until the end, trailing 14-12, but she could not find a takedown before the clock expired.  Mares was pinned at 145 pounds by Isabelle Morgan and though Wohlwend fended off Ashlea Larson for the first period, Larson made a pin in the second at 160 pounds.  El-Masri made a final lunge for VU as she pinned Chloe Colvin at 207 pounds in 1:18.

What's Next?  The Lions have a chunk of time to rest and train before the squad travels to Southern Oregon for duals against SOU and Simon Fraser on January 19.
