Lions Display Grit in Atherton

ATHERTON, Calif. -- The first two duals of the season for Vanguard women's wrestling finished yesterday at Menlo but neither went in favor of the Lions.  VU scored a single point against Simon Fraser in a 46-1 defeat.  Abbeygael Cabuag was the only winner for the Lions on the day, as she produced a victory at 117 pounds against Menlo in an eventual 44-6 defeat to the reigning NIAA National Champions.

What Happened?  The Blue and Gold were open at three weight classes against the Red Leafs, which handed Simon Fraser 18 free points.  The group that wrestled did their best against a tough program and many of the Lions showed a determined spirit even in defeat.  Alexis Garza produced the sole Vanguard point for the dual, as she gathered two points in a 12-2 loss to Unya Hollmayer at 103 pounds, with her two individual points scoring one team point for Vanguard.  Kelsey Louen won over Cabuag 7-0 in the only match of the dual that went the distance, as Cabuag stubbornly refused to get toppled.

Maddie Mackenzie made a pin of Mya Crespo at 117 pounds and Laura Alcantor Soto did the same to Mikayla Marquez at 131 pounds.  Jade Trolliand bested Elena Ramirez at 138 pounds 10-0 before Hanna Duus pinned Ireri Mares at 145 pounds.  Johanna Forman was pinned at 160 pounds by Lene McCracken.

Against Menlo, the Lions were also up for a fight and fought their hardest against the program that had the most points at the 2024 NAIA Tournament.   The bright spot was Cabuag trouncing Micaela Correa at 117 pounds, as the Lion rolled her across the mat for a 12-2 technical fall victory.  Crespo and Forman also scored points for the squad in their respective bouts, as Crespo lost 12-2 against Rebecca Fletcher and Forman by the same score to Alana Ontiveros.  That gave the Blue and Gold six team points against the Oaks, who got pins over Mares, Rameriz, Garza, and Julie Garcia to give the home side the win.

What was Said?  "We wrestled hard and we can't wait to get back to work after the Thanksgiving break," relayed Head Coach Joe Evano.

What's Next?  The Lions have their lone home dual against Westcliff on December 6 at 7:00 p.m.
