GREAT FALLS, Mont. -- Vanguard women's wrestling sent six wrestlers to the University of Providence in Montana over the weekend for the Battle of the Rockies Tournament. The Lions were unable to replicate their success at Menlo and were unable to net a placer despite a solid effort from all the wrestlers.
What Happened? Alexis Garza had two bouts at 110 pounds, with her first being against Eastern Oregon's Katelyn Leonard. Garza got the first takedown, but Leonard countered to level things at 2-2 after one period. Garza tried to replicate her scoring move from before, but Leonard got two takedowns to win 6-2. Garza then faced Alexia Fabian of Evergreen Stae and again got the first takedown, but Fabian did the same as Leonard and put up six unanswered points to win 6-2.
Mya Crespo checked into the 117-pound bracket and faced Arisna Stott of Indiana Tech and got one takedown in the first period to tie things at 2-2. Stott would then attack and almost get enough points for a technical fall victory, but Crespo replied with a four-point move to stay alive. But despite her effort, Stot would score the next nine points to win 17-6. Crespo avenged herself in a tussle with Alana Thompson of Westcliff, as the Lion would win via pin in the first frame. She then squared off against Marissa Kirtz of Southern Oregon and the Raider got the win via pin in the first frame.
Angelina Daoang was in the 124-pound bracket and drew Brooklyn Jones of EOU to start her run. Daoang had a great start, netting the first six points, but her stellar start was cut short by Jones getting the next six points and turning that into a pin. Daoang then squared off against Ruby Barrett Reese of Westcliff and again struck first, this time for eight points. However, Reese rattled off the next four and then turned that into a pin to advance.
Mikayla Marquez represented VU at 131 pounds and faced Wilow Harvey of Providence and, unfortunately, Harvey got an early pin to advance. Marquez tried to respond against Kaylee Annis of SOU, and despite some good defense, Annis would put up 10 unanswered points to win 10-0.
The Blue and Gold had two wrestlers at 160 pounds, with
Johanna Forman taking on Hailey Sutton of Providence first. Forman launched a quick strike to open the bout to lead 2-0, but it was all Sutton after that, as the Argo won 13-2. Her opponent in the consolation side of the bracket was Cydney Bassett of Indiana Tech and Bassett would find an early hole to win 10-0.
Kylee Wohlwend was the other Lion in the bracket and Wohlwend nailed a good takedown to start the proceedings against Kacey Lee Pua of Providence. But the Argo got a four-point move done after that and wheeled that into a pin to advance. She then had to match up against Chloe Overgaag of EOU and though Wohlwend once more led 2-0, Overgaag would post the next slew of points and eventually made a takedown.
What's Next? The Lions will have their first team dual of the year against Menlo on November 23 in Atherton.
