COSTA MESA -- The second half was where all the action took place on Saturday afternoon in the women's soccer clash between Vanguard and Hawaii Hilo. The shot counter went from four in total in the first half to 14 alone in the second, but despite the downpour, neither team could find a goal. The Lions will earn a strong draw against the second-place team in the Pacific West Conference, as the Lions go to 2-7-1 overall and 1-4-1 in league play. Hawaii Hilo goes to 8-0-3 overall and 5-0-1 in the PacWest.
Sydney Powell led the lineup with two shots, with four other VU players collecting one.
What Happened? The Vulcans had the opening corner kick in the 11th minute, but the resulting shot went over the bar. Vanguard's first CK landed for Powell, but her shot was blocked out of bounds.
Hailey Garvin had the other shot for the Blue and Gold in the first 45 minutes, but it missed left of the net. The Vulcans also missed the frame with their other effort in the half, leaving both teams scoreless after one period.
The stats in the half were equal, with each team garnering two shots, three corner kicks, and six fouls.
Powell had her second shot just a minute into the new half, but it was blocked again. That shifted attention to the other end of the field and
Jordin Holmquist-Wilder. She made five clutch saves in the second half and snuffed out multiple through balls that could have led to scoring chances. That was caused by an aggressive approach by the Vulcans in the second portion of the contest, as the visitors put up 10 shots, five on goal, in the frame.
Holmquist-Wilder made her first stop in the 57th minute and she picked up another in the 64th, though neither attempt troubled her much. Her big moments came later in the half as she stopped shots just 60 seconds apart starting in the 85th minute, with her diving save to the left on the first attempt robbing the Vulcans of an opening strike.
Though pushed throughout the period, Vanguard made a good lunge of their own starting around the 70th minute. The squad had a solid stint in possession and saw a shot by
Francesca Lindstrom blocked and one cranked on target by
Alyssa Fong that was saved.
Kennedy Cypher had a solid strike in the 81st minute but the Vulcan keeper made her second stop of the half.
Though Hawaii Hilo desperately threw the ball forward as the clock counted down, the Lions did not crack under the pressure and the teams settled for a scoreless draw at the final whistle.
What Was Said? "It was a great game from Jordin and I'm proud of the girls for their effort and intensity," said Head Coach
Emily Reynolds. "I am now looking for us to finish off some chances. We are excited to be back on the pitch on Monday."
What's Next? Women's Soccer will play again at 1:30 p.m. on Monday as the Lions welcome Chaminade to Costa Mesa for the first time.
