Lions Draw With Silverswords

COSTA MESA – In an evenly played PacWest women's soccer contest on Monday at the VU Soccer Field, Vanguard and Chaminade battled to a scoreless draw.

VU goalie Jordin Holmquist-Wilder and Chaminade counterpart Izabella Holly each tallied five saves. The Silverswords held slight edges in shots (11-9) and corner kicks (5-3), and both teams had 10 fouls.

Junior Kennedy Cypher led the Lions with three shots, while freshman Hannah Caira and senior Alyssa Fong totaled two apiece.

For the Silverswords, Savannah Breeze Miranda notched three shots.

The Lions earned a point in the PacWest standings to move to 2-7-2 overall and 1-4-2 in the conference. The Silverswords continued their roadtrip to the west coast, leaving Costa Mesa 5-2-4 and 4-0-2 in league play.

What Happened?: Holmquist-Wilder had the most significant save of the match in the 87th minute to preserve the draw. Chaminade's Brynn Shimabukuro threaded a ball into the left side of the 18-yard box, finding Lana Mahi-Murray in 1v1 encounter with Holmquist-Wilder. The Lion goalie charged off her line to meet Mahi-Murray's hard shot, deflecting it out of danger.

The Silverswords peppered the Lions with six of their 11 shots in the last 12 minutes of the game, with Holmquist-Wilder making two saves during that span.

Vanguard was most dangerous in the opening minutes of the second half, as Caira had a clear line to the goal in the 50th minute but did not make solid contact at an exposed Holly. Caira followed up two minutes later with a dangerous header that veered left of net.

Fong also penetrated the Chaminade defense with a threatening half volley in the 53rd minute.

A defensive battle ensued for long portions of the match, but Rachel Penick flirted with a goal scoring opportunity as her laser was momentarily dropped by Holly and then recovered.

The second half featured 13 total shots with seven coming from Chaminade, a contrast from the first stanza in which the Silverswords held a slight 4-3 advantage.

What's Next?: The Lions play their next three games on the road, beginning this Saturday with a 7:00 p.m. kickoff at rival Biola.
