PALMDALE, Calif. -- The Vanguard softball team dropped two 8-0 games to the University of Antelope Valley on Wednesday. The Lions had nine total hits against the Pioneers across both games, leaving 10 runners on base in the shutouts. UAV picked up four home runs on the afternoon and goes to 18-22 overall, with VU dropping to 17-19.
What Happened? Brianna Williams and
Vanessa Robles could not hold down the Pioneers, who struck for three runs in both the first and the fourth frames. With one run tallied in the second and fifth by the home side, 10 hits produced the eight runs necessary to mercy the Lions 8-0 after five innings. Williams lasted only the first inning, with Robles replacing her and going the rest of the way. Each allowed five hits and four earned runs, with Robles recording the only two strikeouts for VU in the game.
Offensively,
Kaylie Williams went 2-for-2 with two singles, one in the first and the other in the fourth.
Mackenzie Hofmann and
Tiffany Pope had the other two base knocks for the Blue and Gold in the game. VU left three runners left on base in the game.
Unfortunately, the second game did not go any differently. VU had one more hit, with Hofmann leading the squad by going 2-for-3.
Kaylie Williams,
Megan Ireland, and
Marissa Gurrola all had one hit each, but the Lions could not scrounge up a run.
LeeAnne Miranda,
Mari Ipatzi, and
Emily Anderson all threw for the Blue and Gold in the contest. Miranda went the first two frames, giving up two runs and striking out two. Ipatzi also gave up two and fanned two in one and one-third of an inning, with Anderson throwing the remainder of the game.
The Pioneers scored two in the first, one in the third, two in the fourth, and three in the fifth to take the win 8-0 off of eight hits. Vanguard had one error and left seven on base in game two.
What's Next? The Lions will return to Golden State Athletic Conference play with a brace of games against the Menlo Oaks on Friday, April 14, starting at noon.
