Hawks Stun Softball With Late Comeback

Box Score

SANTEE, Calif. – San Diego Christian scored three runs over the final two innings to nip Vanguard, 3-2, in the opener of a Golden State Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Friday.

Brianna Humphries hit a game-tying two-run home run in the sixth and Alicia Corona delivered a walkoff RBI single in the seventh to shock the Lions, who had ace pitcher Brianna Williams (SO/Chandler, AZ) in control with a 2-0 lead entering the sixth.

The Lions held a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning of game two before rain halted play. The suspended game will pick up on April 1 when San Diego Christian visits VU for a doubleheader.

VU fell to 11-8 on the year and 2-1 in GSAC play. The Hawks won their conference opener and improved to 4-5 overall.

What Happened?: The Lions scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning off SDCC starter Amaryssa Medina.

Marissa Gurrola (SO/Downey, CA) reached first on an error by Medina and scooted to third on a Brianna Williams single. Emma Noble (SO/Camarillo, CA) followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Gurrola for the 1-0 lead.

With runners on first and second, Ashley Klopfenstein (SR/Indio, CA) got aboard on an error by the third baseman, which allowed Megan Ireland (FR/Tempe, AZ) to touch home and make it 2-0 Lions.

Brianna Williams yielded just three singles and a walk through the first five innings. She avoided trouble in the third after the Hawks got two runners on via a walk and error. Corona hit a grounder to Noble, and the shortstop nabbed the lead runner Maya Abrego at third for the second out of the inning. Emily Lonetree grounded out to second to end the inning.

The Lions had an opportunity to add an insurance run in the sixth, but had a runner caught stealing. Later in the inning, Gurrola walked and eventually made it to third but got stranded on an inning-ending pop up.

That set the stage for an SDCC comeback as Corona led off the sixth with a single. Two outs later, Humphries hit her first career home run to tie the game at 2-2.

VU threatened in the seventh by getting two runners aboard following a Noble single and Kaylie Williams (SO/Moreno Valley, CA) walk. But the Lions grounded into an inning-ending double play to come up empty.

The Hawks manufactured the winning run in the seventh as No. 9 hitter Ashley Waite drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on an Abrego sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Corona singled to plate Waite as the Hawks ended a seven-game losing streak to the Lions.

Why Is It Important?: It was a letdown loss after VU had pounced on Hope International three days earlier, outscoring the Royals 13-1 in a doubleheader sweep.

What's Next?: Weather permitting, the Lions are scheduled to travel to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for a Saturday doubleheader that begins at noon.
