Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Ore. – Brianna Williams (SO/Chandler, AZ) and Mari Ipatzi (FR/Oxnard, CA) combined to allow just one hit over 14 innings as the Vanguard softball team rode the impressive pitching to identical 3-0 wins against Corban on Sunday. Ipatzi tossed a no-hitter in her second career start.
The Lions finished their six-game season-opening roadtrip with a 3-3 record. The Lion pitching duo struck out 22 Warrior hitters between them, and Corban's only hit came on a bunt single in game one.
Shortstop Emma Noble (SO/Camarillo, CA) had an RBI in each game and the Lions gave their pitching early leads with a first inning run in both contests.
What Happened?
Game 1 – The Lions put pressure on Corban starting pitcher Alise Olson in the first as Ashley Klopfenstein (SR/Indio, CA), Bianca Morales (JR/Spring Valley, CA) and Kaylie Williams (SO/Moreno Valley, CA) drew walks to load the bases. Noble had a one-out sac fly to drive in Klopfenstein - and that was all the scoring the Lions needed.
Brianna Williams was fantastic as she set down the side in order in second, fourth and sixth innings. The Warriors got their lone runner in scoring position in the home half of the first when Cambria Kerze struck out but reached first on a wild pitch. She stole second, but was stranded following a ground out and strike out.
Jody Fischer had a two-out bunt single in the third for Corban's lone hit. The only other two Warrior base runners came via a Berkeley Porter hit by pitch in the fifth and a Josie Landis walk in the seventh.
Brianna Williams recorded 10 strikeouts to earn the complete game one-hitter. She fanned at least one hitter in all but two innings, and struck out the side in the fifth.
The Lions added two runs in the third. Kaylie Williams led off with a double and moved to third on Carli Row (JR/Riverside, CA)'s sac bunt. Olson threw a wild pitch to score Williams. Brianna Williams doubled with two outs and came around on a Megan Ireland (FR/Tempe, AZ) single to right.
Game 2 - Vanguard struck again for a first inning run. Klopfenstein drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kaylie Williams laced a double down the left field line to bring in Klopfenstein.
The run off Corban starter Vanessa Hulett-Quinones was enough for the Blue and Gold as Ipatzi was unhittable.
The southpaw nearly threw a perfect game, but hit Katelyn Willard with a pitch in the third.
Ipatzi struck out Corban's first four batters and had at least one strikeout in all seven innings. After getting plunked in the third, Willard stole second, but was stranded as Ipatzi got Fischer to line out to third.
Noble gave the Lions a 2-0 lead in the fifth, poking a single down the right field line to score Ireland, who had walked and stole second. The Lions added another insurance run in the seventh, with Ireland scoring her second run of the game on a Klopfenstein RBI single up the middle.
Ipatzi retired the final 13 Warriors, achieving the no-hitter when Madelyn Robinson grounded out to first to end the game.
"I just wanted to do good for my grandpa who traveled to Oregon to watch me," said Ipatzi. "It was also the Mari magic glitter."
Why Is It Important?: The Lions got two dominating performances from their pitching and found ways to manufacture runs in the wins.
What Was Said?: "Our pitching was the highlight of the day," said Head Coach Sydney Lahners. "Both Mari and Bri threw gems. I'm very happy we finished the weekend with two wins. A great way to go into our home opener on Thursday."
What's Next?: Vanguard hosts No. 10 Southern Oregon on Thursday, Feb. 9 for a doubleheader beginning at noon. The Lions look to avenge a pair of losses to the Raiders, 4-3 and 9-4, on Friday.
