Lions Run Past Elks 114-62

COSTA MESA – The Vanguard men's basketball team hit a season-high 16 three-pointers and forced 41 Stanton turnovers, defeating the Elks in a 114-62 rout on Tuesday at Orange Coast College.

The Lions hounded and harassed the Elks for all 40 minutes, turning those 41 turnovers into 55 points. Vanguard held a jaw dropping 55-4 advantage in points off turnovers.

In addition, the Lions had 29 assists on 43 baskets, finishing at 51.8 (43 of 83) percent for the game. The 29 assists represent the second-most for the program in any game since the 2003-04 season. Vanguard had two 30-assist games in the 2014-15 season and another one against Hope International on Feb. 20, 2021.

The last time VU posted 29 assists in a game occurred on Dec. 30, 2015 against Alberta.

Jackson Larsen led the Lions with 21 points – 19 of those coming in the first half – shooting 8 of 11 from the field. Phillip Willis knocked down six three-pointers for 18 points, and Anthony Tello poured in 17 points in just 15 minutes of action.

Cam'Ron Wilson was VU's fourth double-digit scorer with 10 points and he added a team-high six rebounds.

Twelve Lions recorded at least one assist, with Bryson Metz, Nico Dasca, Mitchell Prevost and Micah Swartz all tying for team-high honors with four apiece.

VU racked up 24 steals with Tello and Pape Cisse collecting four each.

Robert Aguirre Jr. hit three triples to finish with a career-high nine points in 13 minutes.

Stanton got a rare triple-double from Troy Green, who finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 12 turnovers.

Why Is It Important?: The Lions filled up the stat sheet in every way imaginable, posting their highest scoring game since dropping 120 on Bethesda on Jan. 18, 2022.

What's Next?: The Lions hit the road to face SAGU American Indian on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Phoenix, Ariz.
