Box Score COSTA MESA – In Thursday's win against Menlo, the Vanguard men's basketball team used a furious second half run to overcome a double-digit deficit against the northern California foe in a comeback victory.
Unfortunately, Jessup employed the same formula against the Lions on Saturday at Orange Coast College.
Trailing by as many as 12 in the first half and down seven entering second half crunch time, the Warriors outscored the Lions 22-7 over the final eight-plus minutes to escape with a 74-66 victory.
Jessup shot 54.2 (13 of 24) percent over the final 20 minutes to catch a spirited Lions group. However, it was a tale of two halves as VU managed to shoot just 34.5 (10 of 29) percent from the field in the second stanza, including 3 of 14 from distance.
The Lions finished at 51.7 (15 of 29) percent overall and drained 6 of 10 from three-point range to forge a 40-34 halftime lead. The Warriors shot just 4 of 17 from beyond the arc and were fortunate to trail by only six at the break.
Jessup outscored VU 40-26 in the second half.
Garrett White (SR/Post Falls, ID) led all scorers with 19 points. He shot just 7 of 19 overall, although he was a solid 4 of 8 from three-point distance. He tied for game-high scoring honors with seven rebounds.
Isaac Davis (SR/Valencia, CA) posted 17 points on 6 of 12 shooting, adding six assists, three rebounds and a steal. Jackson Larsen (JR/El Cajon, CA) had 10 points, while Phillip Willis (SR/San Diego, CA) and Preston Sims (JR/Orange, CA) finished with eight apiece.
Myles Corey and Cash Williams topped the Warriors with 18 points each. The Jessup bench outscored Vanguard's 23-4, with 7-foot-2 center Aashay Verma notching 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots in 20 minutes of action.
The Lions fell to 11-9 overall and 5-7 in the Golden State Athletic Conference. Jessup improved to 14-9 and 8-5 in conference play.
What Happened?: The Warriors made eight of their final 10 shots over the last 7:45 to fight back from a 59-52 deficit and take the win.
Corey scored eight points during the game-clinching 22-7 burst, including a pair of threes and a flying two-handed dunk from the right side.
Xavier Lovelace's conventional three-point play completed a 7-0 run and knotted the score at 59-59 at the 6:39 mark.
Davis regained the lead for the Lions with a pair of free throws but Lovelace slipped inside for a layup to retie the score.
Larsen scored inside to give VU its final lead at 63-61 with 4:52 to play.
The key sequence ensued as Jayden DeJoseph's three gave Jessup the 64-63 advantage. The Lions committed turnovers on their next two possessions – and the Warriors capitalized with back-to-back three-pointers from Williams and Corey to polish off a 9-0 run for the 70-63 lead.
Sims buried a triple to pull the Lions within four, and VU attempted to pressure Jessup for the steal. Corey eluded the defense and flew in for the hammer, all but sealing VU's fate at 72-66 with 1:11 to play.
The Lions missed four straight three-point attempts to close out the game.
VU built an early double-digit lead as a jumper from Davis completed a 13-3 run and put the Lions up 18-6.
Davis drained a jumper to maintain a 10-point advantage at 30-20, and back-to-back triples from White and Sims had the Lions leading 40-28 at the 2:26 mark.
But the Warriors scored the final six points of the first half to cut the deficit to six. Verma was productive off the bench for the Warriors, scoring eight of his 10 points over the last six minutes to help keep Jessup close.
Why Is It Important?: The Lions are tied for seventh in the GSAC standings, one game behind Menlo for the sixth spot. The top six teams qualify for the GSAC Tournament in February.
What Was Said?: "Credit Jessup for hitting big shots at big moments in the second half," said Head Coach Rhett Soliday. "After our guys completely emptied the tank on Thursday to get a big win, I felt we got a little fatigued and quit attacking the zone as aggressively as we did in the first half. When we scored and set our defense we were effective, but when we didn't hit shots and they got going in transition, it changed the game a bit. Onto the next as we have a huge trip in Arizona next week."
What's Next?: The Lions head out on the road to Arizona next week. VU will face No. 4 Arizona Christian on Thursday in Glendale with tip time at 6:30 p.m. (PT).
