SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Lions (3-2,0-1) (RV) traveled north to take on the fourth ranked Westmont College (4-0,1-0) in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener for both schools. The Warriors swept the game by scores of 25-21,25-18,25-17.
What Happened? The opening set was the closest score for the Lions despite having more attacking errors than kills. In the second period, the Warriors posted 15 kills compared to 13 for the Blue and Gold, but the key difference was only four errors in attacks. A sweep was secured behind a .205 clip by Westmont compared to only .100 for the Pride.
Why It's Important? This is the first of a two-game set this week against the Warriors, as the conference has split into East and West Divisions. It is normal for teams to play twice (home and away) but traditionally the entire nine conference opponents are played through first before playing a team for a second time.
Top Performers: Cambria Fernandez (JR/Northridge, CA) tallied 10 kills and 16 digs which was a game high for both teams. Madeline DeLucia (FR/Happy Valley, OR), the reigning GSAC Setter of the Week, totaled 22 assists. Rainena Schenbeck Chang (SR/Aiea, HI) posted 11 digs which her defensive partner Victoria Verceles (SO/Long Beach, CA) added eight. Hailey Peterson led the way at the net with four block assists.
What They Said: Head Coach JP Dorn – "Westmont is a quality team, and it is always a tough place to play. All credit to them for taking advantage of our mistakes; We have a lot of work to do in order to get to our goals and we are looking forward to getting back on the court."
What's Next: Friday, February 19th against Cal Baptist University at 5:30 p.m.
