FULLERTON, Calif. – Holding the 12th ranking in the country according to the NAIA Coaches' the Lions (5-0,2-0) have captured the first two games of the series against Hope International (0-4,0-4). Vanguard rode a hot first quarter to a 65-51 win on the road.
What Happened? The familiarity of both teams after playing just 48 hours prior showed in the opening few minutes of the game. Vanguard took hold of the game, breaking a 5-5 tie and went on a 15-6 run over the final 6:55 of play to lead 20-11 at the break. The Royals did not stop fighting, as they closed it to a 26-20 margin which held until two free throws by Gabriela Rosas (JR/Chihuahua, Mexico) and a bucket by Aggie Manu (JR/Cypress, CA) pushed the difference to 10 points – which would also be the halftime spread.
As the third period began, the Lions continued to add to their lead as shots by Estefania Giner (SO/Chihuahua, Mexico) and Rosas brought the score to 42-27 favoring the Pride. Vanguard briefly led by 18 points, but they would not regain that dominant of a lead. Down the stretch of the fourth quarter, the team matched basket for basket as the final score was a 14-point edge for the Blue and Gold.
Why It's Important? Vanguard moves to 59-3 all-time against the Royals, and in the process secures themselves a season series victory over HIU. The non-traditional schedule due to COVID-19 has the Lions only scheduled for four more total contests.
Top Performers: The most impressive statistical accomplishment of the evening was 21 rebounds by Michaella Elad (SR/Ontario, CA), nine of which were on the offensive glass. She filled out other parts of her box score with nine points and fourth assists. Rosas scored a game high 22 points on 7-17 shooting from the field and making six of nine attempts at the charity stripe. Giner was second fiddle in the scoring department with 17 points as she nearly missed out on a double-double with nine boards.
What They Said: Gabriela Rosas - " I think we did a good job breaking their press. We took advantage of what they gave us and the posts were able to go to work. I'd say it was a good team win. I'm excited to go back to practice and get better with the girls for Saturday's game."
