Fresno, Calif. - The Vanguard Lions split a GSAC baseball doubleheader with the No. 12-ranked Fresno Pacific Sunbirds by scores of 0-8 and 3-1 in extra innings.
In the first game of the twinbill, the Lions were shut out by the hosting Sunbirds. The Pride only managed four hits for the contest and left seven runners on base.
The Sunbirds broke a scoreless game open by putting up four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off VU starter Gabriel Garcia. Scott Laird had the big hit of the inning, a two-run single, but a couple of VU errors would help the Sunbirds post a commanding four-run lead.
The Lions relieved Garcia on the hill with Darrell Hudson to begin the bottom of the seventh but the Sunbirds would tack on another run with a pair of hits, fortunately leaving the bases loaded when the final out was made.
The Sunbirds put game one out of reach with three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning using two hits and three walks to take the 8-0 lead, once again leaving the bases full.
The Lions offense was comprised of four singles by Jerry Pena, Jason Dovel, Matthew Avery, and Bryson Rahier.
Garcia (6-4) lasted six innings, allowing four runs and five hits, with two walked batters and six strikeouts. Hudson allowed one run and two hits in his inning of work. Tucker Woods and Joseph combined to pitch the last inning, with Woods allowing three runs off two hits.
Sunbirds starter Aaron Lynn (5-2) receives the win for pitching a shutout only allowing four hits and striking out three batters. Greg Kilgore rounded out the final inning, walking one and striking out one.
In the nightcap, the game was scoreless until Vanguard scored a run in the sixth inning when Brandon Pesante singled and eventually scored on a Sunbird error.
The Vanguard lead didn't last long as Fresno Pacific responded in the bottom of the seventh inning, tying the game at one run apiece off Vanguard starting pitcher Robert Purpura. Scheduled for a seven-inning contest, the game would head into extra innings still tied 1-1.
The Lions took the lead in the ninth inning, beginning with a double to right field by Pena who advanced to third off a ground out by Jeremiah Mejia. Jake Domingos had a two-run single to right-center scoring Pena and Dovel, which proved to be the game-winner.
The Blue and Gold scored three runs off nine hits with no errors while the sunbirds managed one run on six hits with an error for the game. Vanguard left six runners on the bases and Fresno stranded five runners in the nine-inning contest.
The Lions were led by Tyson Leighton with a hit and an RBI, Domingos with a hit and two RBI, and Dovel who went 2-3 and scored a run.
Purpura commanded the mound for the Pride for seven innings allowing only four hits and one run, while striking out 11 Sunbirds. Mike Leal (3-2) gains the win for allowing only two hits in the final two innings.
Fresno starter Jesse Darrah allowed a single run during his six innings on the hill, while giving up six hits, striking out nine batters.
Reliever Michael Rivera struck out two batters in his inning in command. Michael Jimenez (0-3) received the loss for allowing three hits and two runs in the two innings of work.
The doubleheader brings the Pride's overall record to17-20 with 14-14 in GSAC play, and Fresno Pacific now stands at 24-14, 18-10 in conference play.
The Lions return to the diamond April 11th at Biola University to complete the last game of a four-game set, which had been postponed due to wet field conditions.
