La Mirada, Calif. - The final game of the four-game series between the No. 7-ranked Biola Eagles and the Vanguard Lions was finally played today, more than two weeks after its originally scheduled date. With all four of the games postponed and rescheduled due to wet weather, the series finale seemed like it would never come. However, the teams did reunite today for the seven-inning contest (originally the second half of a Saturday double header) to see if one team could win the series outright or if it would end in a tie. Holding a one game lead in the series with two of the three games being decided by one run, Biola rode a five-run fourth inning to a narrow victory, 7-6, to win the series 3-1.
The Eagles went right to work offensively against the Lions, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against senior lefty Bryce Reid. Making his second start of the season, Reid gave up three straight hits and then tallied the first out of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Drake Fages for the 2-0 Eagle lead. Reid held the hosts for the next three innings, including a perfect third inning, before running into trouble again with two outs in the bottom of the fourth.
Meanwhile, the Lions had tied the score in the top of the third on a two-run double by Sean Wilson against Biola's Kyle Atkins. The Lions flexed their muscles with back-to-back homers by Jason Dovel and Kyle Hardman in the top of the fourth to give Reid a 4-2 lead heading into the home half of the fourth.
However, with one man on and two outs, the Eagles worked Reid for a base on balls to put the tying run on base. The Lions brought in Joseph Vega III to relieve Reid, but Vega walked the next two batters to force home the first run of the frame. David McNeil singled they tying run in before Fages cleared the bases with a double to left-center, giving Biola a 7-4 lead.
The Lions seemed undaunted by Biola's five-run fourth and came back strong in the top of the sixth off Biola reliever Cameron McVey. Dovel was hit by a pitch with two outs and Hardman crushed a McVey pitch over the left field fence to bring the Lions within a run, 7-6. However, McVey would leave a VU runner on base in the sixth and the seventh to earn his 10th save of the year for the Eagles.
Hardman showed his power at the plate with his second and third homers of the year and three runs batted in, while Wilson had two hits and two RBI, as the duo combined for more than half of VU's seven hits. Dovel's dinger was his second of the season but the Lions fall by one run for the ninth time this year.
Atkins picked up his fourth win for the Eagles who improve to 25-14 and remain in second place in the GSAC standings with a 19-8 conference mark.
Reid allowed four hits and four runs in 3.2 innings on the hill for Vanguard. Vega finished the game with two scoreless innings, but was charged with four hits, three earned runs, and the loss as the Lions slip to 17-21 overall and 13-15 in GSAC.
The Lions have a chance to make up some ground in the conference standings this week as they begin a four-game series with the first place and No. 8-ranked California Baptist Lancers on Wednesday. Game on is at CBU beginning at 3:00 p.m.
