Sea Lions Win Pitcher's Duel

San Diego, Calif. - Carroll B. Land Field - Point Loma Nazarene University won its third straight GSAC baseball game with a shutout in the first of a four-game series against the visiting Vanguard Lions. Led by Garrett Levsen and Chris Gonzales, who combined to hold the VU Lions to one hit over nine innings, the Sea Lions denied another outstanding pitching performance from VU's Gabriel Garcia, who pitched a complete game but took the 1-0 loss.

The Sea Lions cashed in on an early opportunity against Garcia as Allen Boyer led off the bottom of the first inning with a double to left field. Moving over to third on a sacrifice bunt, Boyer scored on a ground out without the aid of another PLNU hit for the 1-0 lead. Garcia scattered six singles and one walk over the next seven innings, while striking out five Sea Lions, stranding six base runners, and holding the hosts scoreless the rest of the way.

However, Levsen, who set the Lions down in order in the top of the first inning, was even tougher on the hill for the Sea Lions. Senior Tyson Leighton pounded a leadoff double in the top of the second for VU's only hit and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jason Dovel. Levsen hit Kyle Hardman to put two runners on, but he responded by striking out the next two batters to snuff VU's best scoring opportunity. Vanguard's only other legitimate threat was in the seventh inning when Levsen issued two of his three walks in the game.

The PLNU defense picked up Levsen by eliminating the lead runner at third base twice to exit the inning with the 1-0 cushion intact. Allowing one hit and three walks over seven innings of work, Levsen struck out six Lions before handing the job over to Gonzales. Gonzales did not disappoint the Sea Lions as he retired six straight Lions to conserve the win and the shutout, earning his first save of the year. PLNU improves to 14-13 overall and 9-11 in GSAC with the victory. Making his eighth start and completing his second game of the year, Garcia drops to 5-3 despite a one-run outing.

The Lions drop to 13-15 overall and 9-9 in GSAC with the loss but will have a chance to even the series tomorrow when Vanguard returns to Carroll B. Land field for game two against the Sea Lions. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
