Vanguard University

The athlete:  Matt had another very successful season in 2002…led Vanguard in goals and total points…was named to the All-GSAC, All-Region II, and the NAIA All-America Honorable Mention teams for the second consecutive year…attended Cypress College in 2000, but did not compete…garnered All-League and All-CIF honors while playing for Valley Christian High School…the 2000 VCHS grad scored 66 goals in his senior season and 134 in his high school career…also earned League MVP honors in 2000 and played in the All-American High School game…possesses good vision on the field…has great goal scoring capabilities…team captain…has the respect of his teammates spiritually and athletically…look for Matt to have another 20-goal season…key factor to the Lions’ success.

The person:  Matthew was born in Long Beach, California on June 13, 1982…parents are Bruce and Wanda Hess…youngest of three children…likes to eat Mexican food…would like to meet his sports hero, Michael Jordan…favorite movie is “Gladiator”…cheers for the Chicago Bears…likes to water ski and hang out with his girlfriend…favorite color is blue…believes poverty is the biggest problem in the world…experience has taught him that life is not easy…playing soccer has taught him to be a team player and work hard…wants to become a successful businessman, husband and father.

His thoughts:  I came to Vanguard to play soccer and get a good education.  I really like my professors and the other students at VU.
