The athlete: Mariano returns to Vanguard for his second season…joined the Lions in 2004 after playing two years at L.A. Harbor College…played for coach Bill Barlow…Second-Team all-conference in 2002…as a freshman his team won the South Coast Conference Championship…played club ball for the Lakewood Storm…very solid midfielder…has Division I talent…good speed and ball handling skills…played in 19 of 21 games last year…scored eight goals and four assists as a junior…Salcedo is due for his best year over…look for him to make a big difference with the Lions in 2005.

The person:  Mariano was born on in Los Angeles, California on September 30, 1983…parents are Efrain Sr. and Tomasa Salcedo…has four brothers and one sister…nickname is “Guero”…is a senior in Sociology at VUSC…enjoys eating Mexican food…favorite movie is “Friday”…loves watching “The Simpsons” on television…roots for Chivas…loves the color blue…favorite number is 17…enjoys swimming and reading…sports has taught him to have discipline…learned from life that you can’t take anything for granted…wants to become a Professional Soccer Player.

Coach Dodge’s comments:  Mariano is one of the strongest outside midfielders in the conference.  I expect him to have a great senior year.
