The athlete: Travis enters his sophomore year as a Lion in 2004…coming off a year where he split time behind the plate…started in 17 games as a freshman…looks to compete for the starting catcher’s job…played at North High School in Bakersfield, California where he graduated in 2002…also played football and basketball in high school…was an All-League player in both sports…has played baseball for 13 years…bats right and throws right…promising young catcher…has a great arm and a bright future with the Lions…athletic and strong player…has a big heart and a desire to compete…expect Travis to have a solid year defensively as well as offensively.

The person: Travis David Westerfeld was born on December 17, 1983 in Bakersfield, California…parents are David and Susan Westerfeld…has three brothers…nickname is “Mr. Incredible”…majoring in History…favorite place is Whistler, Canada…roots for the Boston Celtics basketball team…likes to watch “That 70’s Show”…favorite number is two…enjoys playing racquetball and shopping cart bowling…likes the talent and the players on this year’s team…biggest problem in the world is ignorance…learned from life that it’s not what you know, but it’s who you know…wants to become a teacher and a coach.

His thoughts: I selected Vanguard because of the friendly atmosphere. It’s also a place where I can play baseball with Christian teammates and coaches. The location is great.
