The athlete:  Randy becomes a Lion after a solid high school career at Mission Bay High School in San Diego…played for Coach Dennis Pugh at MBHS…all-league selection…helped MBHS win the 2004 CIF Championship…has played baseball for eight years…bats right…throws right…catcher with good size…good balance in the box…skilled hitter with power to all fields…will compete to catch or play the designated hitter position…gives Vanguard some good options in 2006 and a good outlook for the future…look for Smith to compete for action as a freshman.

The person:  Randall was born on October 23, 1987 in Bakersfield, California…parents are Alan and Barbara Smith…has one younger sister…hasn’t decided on a major of study at this time…friends call him “Randy” for short…sports hero is Alex Rodriguez…watches “One Tree Hill” on television…likes the movie “Blow”…prefers the numbers 19 and 13 and favors the color red…cheers for the Texas Rangers…favorite place is Italy…loves playing baseball and listening to music…would like to meet Marilyn Monroe…feels that terrorism is the biggest problem in the world…likes his teammates and how hard they work…has learned from life that it takes teamwork to be successful…competing in athletics has taught him about leadership and team work.

His thoughts:  God opened the doors for me to come to Vanguard, so I came.  VU has a warm environment and very nice people.

Coach Mallernee’s comments:  Randy is a tremendous young hitter.  That is going to be his biggest contribution this year.  He is also a nice young man.
