The athlete: Mike is back for his last season of collegiate baseball…third year wearing VU’s blue and gold…starting right-handed pitcher…recorded a 5.31 earned run average as a junior…started 12 games and pitched a team-high 78 innings in 2005…has 7 career wins for Vanguard…completed six games as a junior… came to Vanguard from Golden West College, where he played one season...hard thrower who is still developing his talent…great work ethic…played high school baseball at Fountain Valley High School under coach Ron LaRuffa…also played basketball in high school…has played baseball for 17 years…power pitcher…strong athlete…will compete to be the team’s #1 starter as a senior…2005 NAIA Scholar-Athlete…has the potential and physical strengths needed to pitch at the next level…Guernsey should be ready to finish strong at the collegiate level.

The person: Michael was born in Huntington Beach, California on March 24, 1983 to Jack and Cindy Guernsey…has a sister named Katie (women’s soccer player at VU)…goes by “Mike”…nickname is “Viper”…is an Accounting/Business Administration major at Vanguard…sports hero is Michelle Wi…likes to eat steak…favorite movie is “A Walk To Remember”…likes watching “The Ultimate Fighter” on television…loves the color black and wears the number 3…roots for the Vanguard Lions…enjoys hanging out with his girlfriend…thinks that racism is the biggest problem in the world…would like to meet Jesus…likes that his VU team is really talented…has learned from life that hard work pays off…competing in sports has taught him about discipline and obedience…wants to become a Certified Public Accountant.

Mike’s closing thoughts: I love the teachers and people who have made my experience at Vanguard very memorable.  I hope that people would remember me as a driven and hard working person who had a “Gold Pride” mentality.

Coach Mallernee’s comments: Mike is going to be a key factor to our success this year.  He has great command of he pitches and wants the ball every game.  You can’t find a better person either.
