Vanguard University

The athlete: Matt enters his third season at Vanguard…coming off a solid junior season where he earned a starting outfield position…has played in 70 games, starting 53 as a Lion…has 41 career hits and was third on the team with 22 RBIs in 2005…played high school baseball at Wenatchee High School…played for coach Ed Knaggs in the Big 9 Conference…was a second-team all-conference selection as a junior…also played basketball and football in high school…has played baseball for 16 years…bats right and throws right…big, strong build…solid tools offensively and defensively…will continue to develop those talents with experience and work…has a great future left at VU…expect Voorhies to begin that future now.

The person: Matt was born in Turlock, California on August 7, 1984 to his parents Steve and Sally Voorhies…has one older brother…is a Kinesiology major at Vanguard…just goes by “Matt”…favorite athlete is “Manny Ramirez”…loves to eat Mexican food…favorite movie is “Racing Stripes” and “Roxanne”…favorite color is blue…loves the beach…cheers for the Seattle Mariners…hobbies include playing beach volleyball and chillin’ with friends…believes that jealousy is the biggest problem in the world…has learned from life that everyone goes through ups and downs...loves the chemistry on his VU team…sports has taught him to persevere through the downs…isn’t sure what he wants to be in the future.

His thoughts: I chose VU because of the location, the Christian environment, and the baseball team.  The people are all extremely friendly.

Coach Mallernee’s comments: Matt is continuing to improve throughout his college career.  We need this to be a breakout year for him.
