The athlete: Matt enters his second season for VU…appeared in 23 games as a sophomore in his first season for the Lions last year…transferred to Vanguard from Spokane Falls Junior College…graduated from Cheney High in 1997 where he played baseball and basketball…all-league pitcher his senior year… went 5-4 with 30 strikeouts last season…had the most appearances (23) among the VU pitching staff in 2002…pitched third most innings on the team last season…worked as a starter and in relief…mature and focused approach to the game…will carry a big load for the Lions this year.

The person: Matthew was born October 19, 1978 in Sandpoint, Idaho…parents are Brian and Cathy Caston…call him "Matt"…roots for the Seattle Mariners…sports hero is Orel Hershiser… favorite place is the mountains…enjoys hiking and playing basketball…thinks the best thing about this year's team is the depth…sports has taught him how to compete and focus…wants to become a coach and Athletic Trainer.
