The athlete:  Jason joins the Lions from Canyon High School in Anaheim…graduated in 2005 after leading CHS to the Century League Championship…played for Coach Joe Hoggatt…cleanup hitter led the team in homeruns…first-team All-League…voted Best Hitter…2003 Gold Medal Winner at Junior Olympics…2003 CIF Finalist…also played football and basketball at CHS…played scout ball for the OC Angels and the TB Bulldogs…has played baseball for 13 years…good size and strength for a rookie…throws right…bats right…good base runner…strong physique…good arm…lanky build with room to get stronger…talented hitter with power to all fields…expected to make a big impact in his first year with the Lions…look for Machado to be a big key to the future of Vanguard baseball.

The person:  Jason Michael Machado was born on March 23, 1987 in Brandon, Florida…parents are Armando and Zori Machado…nickname is “Mack-A-Doe”…has not decided on a major at this time…loves to eat sushi and watch “The OC” on television…favorite movie is “Dumb and Dumber”…sports hero is Barry Bonds…loves the color blue and prefers the number 25…roots for the NY Yankees…likes spending free time at the beach…enjoys surfing, body boarding, fishing, playing golf, and playing guitar…would like to meet Rob Machado…believes that hunger is the biggest problem in the world…likes that his VU team is so talented…has learned to not take life for granted…competing in athletics has taught him about discipline…wants to become a professional baseball player.

His thoughts:  I came to Vanguard to be in the Christian atmosphere, in the small school setting, and a part of the baseball team.  I really like the friendships I’ve made, the location, and the morals taught at Vanguard.

Coach Mallernee’s comments:  Jason is a competitor.  He has a tremendous upside and there is no question that he will contribute as a freshman.
