The athlete: Andrew is a second-year player who is a senior academically…returns after a solid rookie season with the Lions…appeared nine times on the mound in 2005…pitched 25 innings making three starts and recording a 4.48 ERA…joined the VU baseball team after spending a year at San Diego State University…did not compete in athletics…played his high school ball at Mt. Whitney HS in Visalia, CA...played for coaches Mike Lewis and Dan Hydash…MWHS Team MVP…solid 12/6 breaking ball…good hard stuff, upper 80s or possibly low 90s…planned  to be VU’s closer in 2006…great potential…will be interesting to see him develop over the season…look for Riddle to fill an important role for the Lions in 2006.

The person: Andrew Gregory Riddle was born in Visalia, California on March 2, 1984…father is Greg Riddle and mother is Joellen Gilman…has four siblings…nickname is “Riddler”…sports hero is Paul Lo Duca…enjoys eating Mexican food…watches “Sportscenter on television…loves Dodger Blue…favorite movies are “Boondock Saints” and “The Sandlot”…roots for the LA Dodgers…loves the number 23…enjoys reading the Bible…biggest problem in the world is ignorance…likes the depth and talent on his VU team…has learned from life that patience is a virtue and that good things happen to those who wait…competing in athletics has taught him that hard work pays off…would like to be a baseball player or the General Manager of a professional baseball team.

His thoughts: I came to Vanguard to be closer to my friends and for a change of scenery.  I really prefer the smaller school atmosphere.

Coach Mallernee’s comments:  Andrew has emerged as one of our best pitchers with great stuff.  His breaking ball is absolutely filthy.  We look to use him in short relief and closing roles.
