SOUTH JORDAN, Utah -- The Vanguard women's golf team was in the swing of things the past two days at the Westminster Wasatch Invitational at the Glenmoor Golf & Country Club. The Lions placed ninth out of the field of 14, with
Karis Haltom leading the lineup by ending in a tie for 16th. Point Loma shot one over par as a team (577) to take the team trophy and had the individual champion in Annika Yturralde (141, -3).
The Course: With an overall length of 6,815 yards, the Glenmoor Golf Club offers some mild traps and hazards, but the elevation changes, narrow confines, and tight turns are the hardest part of the course. Set as a par 72, the weather can always turn the course into a trickier challenge at a moment's notice.
What Happened? Haltom ended day one within reach of the podium after shooting an even 72. She had birdies on the fifth, 10th, and 14th holes to negate three bogeys, while she made par on every other hole, including the entire front nine. Her second round had five bogeys and 13 pars to end with a 78, with her +6 on day two leading to a total of 150 for the event.
Theresa Shaw was the next VU golfer in the standings, and she finished three shots behind Haltom with a 153 (+9). Shaw had a birdie on the second hole on day one and 10 pars to net 78 strokes, though she then shaved off three shots on Monday to pick up a 75 to end tied for 20th. She pocketed birdies on the fifth, seventh, and 11th holes in addition to sinking 11 pars.
Sophia Forrest completed the event in a tie for 36th with 157 shots over two days (+13). Her first day (77, +5) featured birdies on the fifth and 13th holes and 10 pars, with eight of those coming on the front nine. She then picked up a birdie on the 16th hole today and put down eight pars to collect an 80 (+8).
Kaitlin Anderson was one shot behind Forrest with grand total of 158 (+14) and had a better first day too with a round of 76. She had birdies on the 18th and fifth holes and 10 pars on Sunday before collecting nine pars on Monday to tally an 82.
Rounding out the lineup for the Blue and Gold was
Rylee Salas-Hubbard in 74th, who had 173 total shots (+29). She had a birdie on the 12th hole on day one along with six pars for 89 strokes, and she followed that up with a birdie on the 11th hole and 10 pars on Monday (84).
VU was 10th in birdies (14) and seventh in pars (99) at the event, while Haltom was second in performance on par fours (+1) and tied for fourth in pars (25). The team's first-round score of 303 was good for eighth all-time for a single round, while the 618 for the event is good for third.
What was Said? "We had a tough finish today, but watching this team play golf is always such a pleasure," said Head Coach
Claire Shubin. "These ladies are uplifting, strategic, and a great example of what it means to live like Jesus. Leading with humility, encouraging one another, and putting their faith into action. We have a month off to fine-tune before out next tournament, and I'm so excited to get to work with this group."
What's Next? The Blue and Gold have plenty of time to gear up for the end of the fall slate, with VU off for two contests in Hawaii beginning on October 26.
