HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – Vanguard Beach Volleyball went to war with UC Davis (DI) and Concordia this afternoon at the Huntington Beach Courts, overtaken by both adversaries by 5-0 score lines. The Lions had their tightest frames with the Aggies, pulling out both of their set wins on the day against UC Davis. The Blue and Gold fall to 6-10.
What Happened? Pair four finished first in the bout with the Aggies, with
Jadyn Starling and
Anne Mayfield falling 2-0 against Skye Smolinksi and Kate O'Steen (21-5, 21-9). VU's number second flight of
Cassie Smits Van Oyen and
Hayden Johnston dropped set one 21-18 against Shelby Santos and Katilynn Chastian. The duo then recovered to win the next match 21-17, setting up a narrow finish in the third set which went to the Aggies 18-16.
Avery Bennett and
Jordan Packer represented the Blue and Gold in the threes, dropping the first set 21-12 and putting up a tougher fight in the second frame before Alexandra Leal and Emma Johnston secured the sweep 21-18. The feud at the fives was another tight affair for the Lions, with
Jenae Moore and
Gianna Pecile putting extra points on the table to win the first set 23-21. The Aggies' pairing of Ava Verard and Kirra Martin answered with a 21-18 set two result and found the win 15-10 in the third.
Josephine Springer and
Thea Snider dropped the pair one matchup against Ella Erteltova and Kinley Lindhardt 21-13, 21-10.
Against CUI, the fours were once again the first group to conclude. Starling and Mayfield were able to improve on the earlier tally against the Aggies, but fell 21-13, 21-11 to Rosie Cline and Jordan Vander Veen. Van Oyen and Johnston were outpaced by Ashley Rossi and Kelia at the twos 21-11, 21-15. The Golden Eagles clinched the matchup in the third flight, with Lexi Godbey and Olivia Medina overtaking Bennett and Packer 21-12, 21-10. Springer and Snider also suffered the same fate, posting 21-17, 21-16 scorelines in the loss to Aliyah Moore and Teagan Alvarez. At the fives, Moore and Pecile came closest to picking off a set against CUI. They lost set one 21-17 and were just a hair off forcing extra points for the second time on the day with a 21-19 loss against Madi Kelly and Emma Hugeback.
What's Next? The Lions will head to OC Great Park on Friday, March 27, for a match against CSUN at 9 a.m., followed by a duel with CSU Los Angeles at 1 p.m.
