DOWNEY, Calif. -- Vanguard women's golf returned to the links the past two days for three rounds at the CSU Los Angeles Spring Kickoff. Vanguard placed 13th as a team, and
Theresa Shaw was the top placer for VU, ending in eighth. Point Loma's Allie Nguyen won the individual honors, and the team took the event title as well.
The Course: Originally built in the 1920s but redesigned in 1994, the Rio Hondo GC in Downey has a maximum yardage of 6,370 yards and is a par 71. Featuring plenty of trees and four water hazards, the 14th hole asks golfers to clear a lake to make the green, but otherwise, the course is straight and easily navigable.
What Happened? Shaw was only held back by her first round of 77 (+5), as she hit even par (72) for rounds two and three. The Lion had two birdies and 11 pars during round one, six birdies during round two, and four birdies and 11 pars on Tuesday. She had 221 strokes in all and was tied for third out of the field with 12 birdies.
Kaitlin Anderson was next for the Blue and Gold and registered rounds of 76-82-79 for 237 shots, ending tied for 40th. Anderson had birdies on the eighth and 15th holes Monday morning and 11 pars. She then had eight pars on Monday afternoon and had a streak of eight pars in a row this morning, finishing with 11 again.
Brooke Carpenter ended in 68th after scores of 87-84-82 (253). She had three birdies during her opening round (third, sixth, and 14th holes), and her best round for pars was today, as she concluded her final round with nine.
Right behind her was
Grace Kiger, who had a total of 254 after garnering rounds of 86-84-84. She had 10 pars on Monday morning and had two birdies on the fourth and 15th holes today.
