Women’s Golf Finishes February at the Tim Tierney Shootout

OAKLAND, Calif. – Vanguard women's golf headed north for the past two days, exploring the confines of the Corica Park Golf Course in the Tim Tierney Shootout. The Lions took 13th place (632), with Theresa Shaw leading the way with a tie for 24th. The field of eight nationally ranked programs was conquered by #16 Cal State San Marcos, who went 13 under par to pinch a score of 563, 10 strokes better than second-place #35 Point Loma. Individual honors went to Avery Foster of CSUSM, as she bested Zoe Garcia of Seattle Pacific after two playoff holes, as both had finished at -8 after 36 holes.

The Course: The 18-hole course was established in 1927 and features three main courses, with the South Course acting as the staging grounds for the tournament. Designed by renowned architect Rees Jones, the South Course is one of California's best-kept secrets. Named the12th Best Municipal Course in America in 2021 by GOLF Magazine, this Australian Sandbelt style course features expansive and rolling fairways with fun risk-reward options for imaginative shot-making. Its 6,874 yard bandwidth was built using eco-green climate sustainable grass and holds more dog legs and water features than some of its counterparts.

What Happened? Shaw shaved off three strokes on her second run of the course to climb up 15 places on Tuesday. She had two of her three birdies in her final round, with a birdie on her 17th hole, a spot which gave her trouble the day prior. Shaw closed with rounds of 76-73, to net a score of 149. She was tied sixth at the event in pars (25), tied 23rd on par-five holes (4.88, -1), and was tied 30th on par-threes (3.25).

Kaitlin Anderson spread out rounds of 79-78 to clock in at 157 and take a tie for 60th.  Her four birdies were a team-best, as the sophomore split two on each day. She also tacked on 18 total pars, which was tied for 56th.

Brooke Carpenter and Rylee Hubbard were separated by two shots, with Carpenter ending in 74th after identical rounds of 81-81, while Hubbard held onto her first day score to move into 82nd (81-83). Carpenter had three birdies, 15 pars, and an even score on par five holes, which was tied 31st at the event. Hubbard tallied 16 pars and found both of her birdies on the first day. Arabella Mishek closed out the Lion competitors with rounds of 90-89 to finish 101st. She crafted five of her nine total pars on Tuesday, with a sharp start through her first five holes.

What's Next? VU will make their way to Escondido for the Fujikura Spring Invite at Shadowridge Country Club, hosted by #16 CSUSM on March 9-10.
