LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The Pacific West Conference named it's Players of the Week today and
Aibigho Ujadughele was announced as the Defender of the Week for his prowess in two VU wins. Ujadughele becomes the first individual for the program to collect a weekly win in program history in the PacWest after the team collected two Team of the Week honors last season.
The week was stellar for VU, as the Lions beat Westmont at home 8--64 and the top team in the PacWest, CUI, on the road 59-56. The Blue and Gold held both opponents to under 60 points, even though both are averaging over 70 points per game.
Ujadughele scored only two points this week but was a stalwart defender, thwarting some of the top guards on both foes. Ujadughele notched a season-high six steals against Westmont, which tied his high from last year that came early in the campaign against La Sierra. He also added one block, one assist, and two defensive rebounds. He grabbed four boards against CUI and slid in for three of Vanguard's five steals against CUI. Ujadughele contributed three assists in the victory and helped hold the Golden Eagles to a 43.4% shooting rate from the field.
Ujadughele will be asked to provide some quality defense in a trio of games this week as the Lions play all three of the Hawaii schools. VU begins with a rematch against Chaminade tomorrow night, as the Silverswords took the first game here in Costa Mesa 76-67.
