GUNNISON, Colo. -- The 35th Annual Tracy Borah Duals welcomed a new entrant in 2026 as Vanguard men's wrestling competed at the event for the first time. The Lions went 2-2 on Saturday to return with a 4-5 mark in duals on the campaign.
What Happened? Against Colorado State Pueblo, the Lions opened the day with a 21-19 victory.
Sid Barron lost in the 125-pound tilt 15-0, but
Zachary Klarcyk leveled for VU with a 17-2 win at 133 pounds. Ferando Barreto Jr. took the 141-pound class 16-4 before
Hercules Windrath picked up an 8-0 decision to bolster the VU advantage to 13-5.
Randy Lockwood lost 7-0 at 157 pounds, and
Caidence Turner took a 10-5 defeat at 165 pounds to pull CSU-Pueblo to within two points. The Lions fell behind 16-13 after
Mason Hernandez lost 18-2 at 174 pounds, but
Marquize Brown shut out his foe at 184 pounds to plunge the Blue and Gold ahead 17-16.
Isaiah Johnson provided the decisive points, as his 10-2 major victory at 197 pounds put VU ahead 21-16, and though David Baxtor lost at the heavyweight class, his 4-2 score line gave CSU-Pueblo only three points.
Colorado Mesa 35 VU 11
The Lions had three individuals win in the second contest of the day, as Klarcyk claimed an 8-2 major decision at 133 pounds to get Vanguard on the scoreboard. Barreto Jr. picked up a 23-8 technical fall victory at 141 pounds and Brown snagged a 10-5 win at 184 pounds, but that would do it for the Vanguard scoring. Barron lost 20-5, Windrath suffered a tight 2-0 defeat, Lockwood fell 21-6, Turner was pinned, Hernandez lost 9-0, and both Johnson and Baxter were pinned.
VU 23 Western Colorado 17
Barron dropped an 18-2 match in the first bout of the encounter, but Klarcyk earned a pin to put the Lions up 6-5. Barreto Jr. added five more points with a 22-5 trouncing, and Windrath snared his first win of the day with a 7-2 decision. While both Lockwood (17-0) and Turner (12-2), dropped their contests to see the dual get tied at 14-14, Hernandez rescued points for the Blue and Gold with an 8-5 triumph in sudden victory. Brown pulled away for a 12-7 victory to increase the VU lead to 20-14, but Johnson was upended to see Western Colorado pull in close, as the Pioneers trailed 20-17. It was up to Baxter, and the heavyweight got a takedown in the third to win the encounter 7-5 and give VU a 23-17 victory.

The Lions were unable to secure any bouts in the final contest of the day. Windrath, Turner,
Keagen Kroeger, and Baxter all got escapes, but no Lion managed a takedown.
What was Said? "I like the way we competed the first three matches," said Head Coach
Caleb Flores. "We beat CSUP and WC, who beat us earlier in the year. We have a lot to work on, but I'm excited to get back to it."
What's Next? The Lions host San Francisco State this upcoming Friday at 7:00 p.m. inside the Freed Center.
