Swords Slash Away Lion Lead

HONOLULU, HAWAI'I – Vanguard baseball surrendered seven runs in the third inning to allow Chaminade to erase a six-run deficit, and the Silverswords earned an 11-7 victory in a PacWest contest on Friday.

The Lions sprinted out to a 7-1 lead through two innings, but Chaminade answered with a big seven-run outburst in the third.

Vanguard's offense did not score again and the Blue and Gold dropped the first of eight straight games on the Hawaiian islands.

VU generated a 14-hit attack, including a 4-for-5 performance from Fred Buckson. The shortstop tied his career high for hits in a game.

Jaxson Davis, Josh Schleichardt and Jarred Mazzaferro each contributed two hits.

The Silverswords bullpen tossed 5.2 scoreless innings with Chris Cody shutting down the VU offense for the larger chunk.

VU is now 23-16 overall and 19-14 in PacWest play. Chaminade improved to 16-22 and 14-19 in conference action.

What Happened?: Vanguard's offense – which scored a season-best 14 runs in consecutive games against Jessup last week – continued its torrid production with three runs in the first against Chaminade pitching.

The Lions posted three straight hits to start the game off Chaminade starter Mac Zawistoski. Davis and Buckson singled, and Schleichardt doubled to center to plate both for a 2-0 VU lead.

Noah Madole drove in Schleichardt on a ground out after the right fielder advanced to third on a passed ball.

VU starter Spencer Edmondson allowed a single run in the bottom half on a Cade Fujii RBI single.

But the Blue and Gold erupted for four runs in the third, the big hit a 2-RBI single from Buckson. The Lions also scored that inning via a fielder's choice and wild pitch.

Edmondson ran into trouble in the bottom half as the 'Swords took an 8-7 lead. He allowed six singles and two walks, with key hits coming from Jackson Dorn and Jake Harper.

Cody entered the game with one out in the fourth and a pair of Lions on base. Cody walked Madole to load the bases, but got the Lions to ground into an inning-ending double play.

In the sixth, Vanguard had runners at the corners, but Cody again escaped trouble with another inning-ending double play.

The Swords tacked on single runs in the fifth and eighth to take an 11-7 lead.

Joseph Perez pitched the ninth for Chaminade. The Lions put two aboard with two outs following an Abe Hernandez single and Levi Hall double. But Perez got the final VU batter on a strikeout to end the game.

Edmondson allowed 13 hits and nine runs (eight earned) to take the loss. He fell to 3-5. Cody improved to 4-3 on the season.

What's Next?: The Lions play Chaminade at 4:00 p.m. (PT) on Saturday from the University of Hawaii's Les Murakami Stadium.
