Box Score COSTA MESA – Cal State LA utilized a six-run eighth inning to post a 9-2 win over Vanguard in the 2025 baseball season opener on Friday at Dean Harvey Field.
It was the first game at the NCAA Division 2 level for the Lions.
Spencer Edmondson got the ball for Vanguard and threw a quality start, logging 5.0 innings with just two hits and one run allowed. He left the game trailing 1-0 after striking out four and tossing 68 pitches.
The Lions scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to take a 2-1 lead. Josh Schleichardt singled with one out, followed by a Nate Madole double. Abe Hernandez drove both runners in after lacing a double down the left field line.
The Golden Eagles retook the lead with two runs in the seventh before exploding for the six spot in the eighth.Â
VU generated 10 hits, including two apiece from Schleichardt, Hernandez and Tristan Gallegos. Jarred Mazzaferro, Tyler Shigenaka and Christopher Famolaro also had a hit.
Vanguard used seven pitchers in the game.
What's Next?: The Blue and Gold return to action on Saturday for an 11:00 a.m. doubleheader against Cal State LA.
